Books for all ages!
When we read a book it is like traveling around the world, or to outer space, or to a land that only exists in a writer’s mind, or into the mind of a killer, or into the animal kingdom, or on a visit to an exotic location, or into the world of faeries or science fiction.
We can go wherever we choose to go! All we need to do is pick up a book about whatever interests us. There are millions of books online, in book stores or libraries to choose from. We can escape for as long as we choose to read.
Did you know that reading is good for you? It not only increases your word vocabulary and stimulates your mind, but also gives you a feeling of wellbeing and promotes good health, dispels feelings of loneliness, improves your memory, promotes better patterns of sleep, and don’t forget – it brings families closer when they share and read books together.
As a child you can imagine that you are a beautiful princess or a strong and brave knight or that you can fly to outer space or that you are a super hero, or do magic. Whatever you desire to be you can have fun imagining while you read.
Do you remember the first time you started to read? What was your favorite book as a child? What do your children like to read? What do you like now as an adult?
As a child I loved nursery rhymes, and reading the classics, like Alice in Wonderland. As a preteen I enjoyed Archie comics, anything to do with Disney Mouseketeers, and mysteries. As an adult I read all of Agatha Christy’s novels, all of my son’s and daughter’s books, Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, so we could discuss them together, and anything I could get my hands on at the library about mysteries.
I hope you will find time in your busy life to spend some time reading. It’s enjoyable and entertaining. Please remember to show some love to authors by leaving a review!

Welcome, Janice ❤️
Terrific reminder Janice of the gift that we have that so many still do not .. and that so many also put that gift away and choose not to read books or even short stories. hugs xx
Thank you, Sally! ❤️xx
Excellent post, Janice! My greatest teaching is reading aloud to my preschoolers. It is the best gift I can give children, from increasing vocabulary to stimulating imagination. I also chapter read. Right now we are “into” Charlotte’s Web. So much wonderful discussion. Thank you for this post!
That’s wonderful, Jennie! You are giving your children a valuable and fantastic service by reading to them! Thank you for the comments and for stopping by. 🤗
You’re welcome, Janice. And, many thanks. 🙂

Since I recently posted something about the brain-based benefits of reading a book on Deb’s blog (D.G.Kaye), I was pleased to see the mention of the benefits in your post as well, Janice. You don’t say it explicitly, but I do believe that the earlier we start reading the more likely we are to be life-long readers who reap its MANY benefits. I have no studies to cite, but I also strongly believe in the benefit of reading children’s book aloud to instill the habit long before children can read alone – true in my own life, in any case.

Yes, I agree, Madelyn! I have mentioned reading to young children in other posts and even in the womb. Thank you for stopping by! Nice to see you! 😀
VERY good for subsequent brain development as well. Are you aware of any studies supporting reading to unborn children?
I do know that children of the chatty have a different developmental trajectory than children of the deaf, for example, but I’m thinking that reading is more rhythmic, so perhaps that’s the benefit?
I imagine reading in the womb is a wonderful time to develop the reading-to-kids habit before the parent’s life gets crazy for a while. And the earlier kids are read to, the more likely they are to become life-long readers themselves (as long as the books are interesting to them).

I agree. I think the child hears the mother’s voice while in the womb which creates a closer bond as she reads to him/ her. It’s not so much of a learning experience then but more a calming and secure feeling for both the mother and child.
That would be my theory as well (along with habit building for the Mom).

Thank you, Madelyn. I will check out your post too. 😀
Thanks! I doubt it will be big news to you, but I think you might enjoy it – and you might be interested in some of the studies I’ve linked.
On my blog the title is “Read any good books lately?” – if it’s aged off my ‘Recent 25 Posts’ list on my sidebar you can search for it onsite (top right). It links to the entire article on Deb’s blog. Don’t recall what she called it.

Thanks, Madelyn! 🤗

You’re welcome.
Beautiful Janice! ❤
Thank you, Debby! I hope more parents will read to and with their children when they realize how important it is for their health and their children’s. ❤️
Absolutely Janice. Reading time is vital for children, it teaches them and expands their imagination. ❤
Thank you, Debby! 💕
Sharing your awesome post, Janice! 🙂 xo

Sharing Janice, lovely post and I couldn’t agree more!
Thank you, Marje! Thanks for stopping by! 🤗
I couldn’t agree more, I find myself turning more and more to books and away from television.
Yes, I agree with that. At least you can control the violence by choosing something meaningful and sweet. There isn’t too much of that on TV nowadays. 😀

Janice Spina reminds us that reading is good for you.
Thank you my dear friend! Much love & hugs! ❤️
My pleasure, Janice. Love and hugs back to you. 😘
Yes, indeed. Well said.
Too true! And I’m alarmed that even a born and bred bookworm like me do often finds herself messing about on her phone rather than reading a real book! What does that mean for those not brought up to read, as I was? Must learn to turn off social media…
I agree, Jessica! I spend too much time cleaning out emails when I should be reading! 😁
Very true. I keep telling my students the advantages of reading. Alas, it does fall on deaf ears.
A lovely post on the benefits of reading and to me that is the best part of the day when I read that bedtime story and see that little eyelid go drowsy but open very quickly if I miss a bit or try to finish early and it is always the same story and we know it word for word…both if us…
OH, I agree! Thank for you kind comment. That’s why I write for children! I imagine children reading my books and feeling joy over the words and illustrations that my husband has drawn. 😃
