Do Your Children Love Crayfish and Hermit Crabs?

JEMSBOOKS EXPRESS (by John Spina)

JEMSBOOKS has 18 children’s books for your kids to enjoy. Two of these books are about crustaceans who lived as pets in our fish tanks. Hop on the JEMSBOOKS EXPRESS for some fun reading for children PS-Grade 3.

Jerry the Crabby Crayfish lived in a 19-gallon freshwater tank. Jerry was quite the fellow – crabby and controlling. He thought he owned the tank. Well, he almost did! He was the biggest thing in the tank.

I had fun creating a story about Jerry who really was crabby. We saw him in action in his crabby state. My grandchildren loved him and couldn’t wait to say hi to him. He was more popular than me! I had to ask them to say hello to me.

If my grandchildren got too close to Jerry’s tank he would look up at them and wave his claws to warn them away. They loved it and kept trying to come closer to get him crankier. Jerry also reminded us to feed him. If my husband was just a minute late he would tap the glass to remind us that he was hungry. He was so sweet even if he was a little cranky. Jerry provided many hours of entertainment for all of us.

He is no longer with us. It was a sad day indeed for me too. But by creating a story about Jerry I kept his memory alive forever. Now all children out there can enjoy meeting Jerry and learning more about him and his tank. It is a fun way for children to learn about crayfish and molting, etc. They will also learn important life lessons of helping others and being kind.

The other book is about a hermit crab, Clarence Henry the Hermit Crab. Clarence was an entertaining fellow too. He came to us with one less claw and leg. He did a great job of cleaning the tank which is why we purchased him. We didn’t expect to have such a special crab that we still miss today. Our current tank needs him badly.

Clarence lived in a 85-gallon saltwater tank at that time. My husband hadn’t noticed that he had less appendages when he purchased him from an aquarium store but that didn’t stop Clarence from getting right into his job of cleaning out the bottom of the tank.

I captured Clarence in many photos changing shells, growing his claw and leg, eating clams, and getting acquainted with his fellow inhabitants of their water world. I included some of these photos in the back of the book for children to enjoy. This book makes for a perfect addition to science curriculum in schools for children to learn about hermit crabs in a fun and entertaining way.

These two crustaceans will always remain in my heart for what they gave back to us. I hope you will enjoy learning about our water world pets. For those who doubt that creatures of the sea have personalities you must meet Jerry and Clarence Henry. They will surprise and delight you with their antics. Even our fish in both of our tanks have distinctive personalities. Some of them we have named but others we have not. It is sad when we lose one of them and to name them it is even harder to bear.
