Louey the Lazy Elephant was my first book published for children – PS-Grade 3, written in rhyme with life lessons on July 23, 2013! It feels like a century ago now. Cover & illustrations done by John Spina
Blurb:
WINNER OF SILVER MEDAL – MOM’S CHOICE AWARDS 10/29/20 Louey is an adorable but lazy elephant who likes to sleep late. One day Louey wakes up to find that the whole herd has moved on without him. Louey is very upset but he is determined to find his herd. Does Louey find his way to his family and friends? Does he learn that it doesn’t pay to be lazy? Take Louey home with you and find out.
As long as I can remember I have always loved elephants but especially baby elephants. They are so adorable and sweet as they follow their mother around and splash through the puddles that they find just like a kid. I want children to feel comfortable with my stories and help them by creating stories with baby animals that they can relate to.
Of course, Louey the Lazy Elephant, does not behave as an elephant should. He didn’t listen to his mother. I created this story to teach each child an important life lesson about always listening to what his/her mother says.
After reading this story with your children, ask them what they learned.
- Did Louey make a mistake when he slept late?
- Should he have listened to his mother?
- What lesson did he learn at the end of the book?
- What animals does Louey meet?
Elephants are known to be very protective and caring parents. They herd together to protect their young as we humans do. Go to learn more about elephants and their habits and habitat from National Geographic.

Please consider giving books to all the children on your list for all occasions. There is nothing better than to see a child’s eyes light up when you give him/her a book – even more so when you read the book to them. You are giving them so much more than you could ever imagine, e.g., you spark their imagination, heighten their creativity, lift their spirits, increase their vocabulary, open up a whole new world to them, enhance their health and wellbeing and encourage them to love reading. The gift of a book is worth more than gold to our children, grandchildren. Keep reading and gifting books to children. Let’s bring up a generation of readers and thinkers. Thank you for your support!
