I recently received a review of my newest 18+ novel – In A Second. It is always thrilling to see a new review of one’s work. Thank you, Michele!

What happened to him? There are more than a few secrets her parents & grandmother are keeping from her, too. Will these secrets destroy her or clear things up for her?
J.E. Spina has another mystery hit on her hands!
I got this book for my honest review.
I began the first chapter of this book in 2018 and set it aside to publish many other books for children and young adults. Once I completed the YA series of Davey & Derek and Abby & Holly I thought it was time to do a novel for 18+. I had forgotten all about this chapter which I stumbled across when I was looking for other books that are written that needed editing. When I saw it I began to read and jumped right in. I changed the title and wrote a prologue because I didn’t like the first chapter as a start of the story. I like to give my readers a shock right from the first page that rocks them and compels them to read more to find out what is going to happen next.
Since I am a pantser, write by the seat of my pants, I let the characters come to life and tell their story. In this story they were ready and took over quickly. I was into so many other projects at that time and didn’t work on this book more than a couple of times a week. Each time I got into the story I had to stop to have dinner (my husband cooked so I could write). Half way through the book I made an effort to work longer on it because the characters were invading my sleep at night until I let them tell their story. Phew!
It’s not easy being a writer! I’m sure other writers out there will agree. Our characters control our lives at times. I would forget to eat, sleep or do housework or cook if I let them get to me. I try to ignore them and go on with my day. At times it is impossible especially when they are in the final stretch of their tale. I rein them in when they get too crazy in different directions or don’t make sense.
In this particular book, I had to go over some of their ranting and fix it. They know what they are talking about but my readers wouldn’t understand it. I tried to tell them this but they wouldn’t listen. I went about sneakily fixing and adding stuff to tie things together. After four reads and my beta readers thoughts I was finished. Sigh! It’s a good feeling to complete a project but at the same time sad because I am leaving the characters behind. One particular character won’t go away. She wants her own story. I told her to sit tight that I had other books to edit and publish first. Maybe after them I would come back to hear what she has to say. See what I mean! They are tenacious!
Watch for more books coming in 2021 – an historical novel, YA fantasy series, and Books 5 & 6 of Drystan the Dragon and Friends. I have ideas for more books in the Mariah series too and, of course, I didn’t forget the character from my latest book who is in my ear right now. She may get her book or books depending on what she has to share with me that I feel is worthy of my readers. Thank you for listening to my diatribe. I do get verbose at times – but I am a writer, after all! Ha! Much love to all my readers!
If you haven’t picked up your copy of In A Second yet, here is the link to the book below. This book is a mix of genres – mystery/suspense/romance/drama/psychological suspense.
Blurb:
Athena feels as if she is going out of her mind. She can’t function after losing her fiancé, Justin, in a car accident, or did she? She keeps having dreams or rather nightmares of being trapped in a car with Justin’s lifeless body. But when she wakes up in the hospital no one will tell her what happened to Justin. She begins to think that he is a figment of her imagination until she calls his number and he answers. They make a date but then, he doesn’t show up.
There are many secrets that Athena’s parents are keeping from her. Can she deal with all the secrets that threaten her whole being? Her only salvation is her Gramma Grace who knows the truth and has the power of clairvoyance to help her.
Athena finally meets someone who could possibly give her a chance at love again but can Lucas give her what she needs or is he asking too much of her? When her psychiatrist, Dr. Nick Jasper, shows an interest in her too she feels overwhelmed and confused.
Will Athena be able to choose between Dr. Jasper and Lucas? Will she ever forget Justin?

Congratulations, Janice, on this lovely review. Thanks for sharing a little bit about your writing process.
Thank you, Robbie. hugs
A great review. You must be very pleased. I love how your characters take over.
Thank you, Darlene. It is fun but unnerving at times. The best part is not knowing how the story will end until it does! hugs xx
I write in a similar style. I never know what will happen next! It works for me and obviously for you too. xo
It’s exciting isn’t it? I feel like I am a reader and not the writer. 🥰
You are very welcome!
