Recently we noticed something strange on our front deck. It was a little horrifying in fact.
Here are some photos to share of this incident. I will explain what I can afterward.
My husband discovered this mess one morning and told me to go to the front door and look out. I didn’t know what I was going to find by the look on his face. I thought I was going to get a package that had been delivered and that maybe was destroyed by the shipper. I never expected to see this – feathers all over the deck. I was horrified and saddened to see this knowing that a bird did suffer. Sigh!
Evidently a bird, possibly a poult, young turkey, was attacked and killed on our front deck. Yuck! There was some blood and plenty of feathers and down feathers from a young bird. If it was a poult, I can’t believe that the mother turkey did not go after the animal that attacked her young.
We think it could have been a feral cat that did this. He hangs around our yard and neighborhood and is fed by some of our neighbors. Here is a photo of him that I took a long time ago.
Here is a photo above of turkeys and their poults that I took in the past. I hope most of these little guys got away.
This is a sad thing to see but I have plenty of animal stories to share with your children that will make you forget all about this sad thing. Please check them out today!

So sad and a good reason to keep your cats inside. Feral cats will do what they will.
They do what they have to in order to survive. Sigh!
They do, poor things. They have a hard life. I hope this one finds a home. I’ll bet someone could partially de-feralize it (is that a word) with a stable food source and some talking to it. I’ve had a LOT of experience in taming feral cats.
There is a woman in our area who catches them and brings them to a vet to be examined and vaccinated. She caught six kittens in our backyard at one time and put them up for adoption after vaccinations. We saw them on our back deck one day, six different kinds of kittens. They were adorable. This gold one has been around for a long time now. Too wild to tame. He has somehow survived even with the fox, Fisher Cats and coyotes around.
That is sad but it’s nature for you.
Exactly. Sigh!
Cats are predators. Mine are trained not to kill birds but they do hunt rats.
That’s good. Rats I don’t like!!
No, you can’t have rats in your house or garden.
We have caught mice that have gotten in! 😫 I don’t like them either.
It’s so sad to see lots of feathers lying together around. Then you know, one was kilt or badly injured. We see occasional a lump of feathers lying in our garden as well. Once or twice, we had a dead bird in our garden. We are always burry them in our garden. We don’t know who kilt it. Never saw a cat or feral cat around. But it’s still sad.
Yes, sad 😔 but it’s survival of the fittest.
