Red Tide of Algae in our Fish Tank!

We recently had an influx of red algae in our saltwater tank. We have never seen anything like this before. We believe it has to do with a new light we put on the tank top to accommodate the anemone we added. Anemone like this type of light that changes from daylight to moonlight and then goes off like nature does in the ocean but so does red algae. Sigh!

By adding this special light to the tank we caused red algae to grow profusely as you can see in the photos below. It was beautiful at first then overwhelming not only to us but to the fish who kept pushing it around to get it out of the way. The anemone though didn’t seem to mind it at all.

Look closely at the photos and you will notice that some of the fish, clown and wrasse are giving me a look as if asking for help.

We felt so sorry for them that my husband had to take all of the rocks out of the tank to clean each one and then clear out the algae on the sand. What a job! He then added a special liquid to get rid of the algae for good. We hope! The fish look a lot happier now. See the difference in the photos.

Now here it is with new water pumps and flow to keep everyone happy!

Anemone looking beautiful and healthy now front and center in the tank where we can enjoy it more!
Wrasse and Clown give me the eye!
Trigger gives me a warning to go away!

Our fish do have their own personalities. Trigger is like a tiger, possessive of his cave in the center of the tank where he recently got stuck when John had to take the cave out to clean it of algae. John had to poke Trigger out with a stick. He finally came out. We thought that Trigger would not want to go back in the cave after that harrowing experience of being stuck, but he was right back in to claim it when John return the cleaned cave to its rightful place in the tank. Wrasse tried to take it over but was chased away by an irate Trigger. Ha!

The tank is a whole lot of work for John but I do enjoy watching them in action and how they try to take control of things in their water world. They certainly are entertaining. We hope to keep the tank going as long as we possibly can and that John can continue to keep it going with all the cleaning and care that it takes.

Thank you for stopping by to read this post. Come back again soon for more events involving our tank, books, etc.

Keep reading and I will keep writing joyfully! Happy July! Happy summer! I’m praying for sun! Today it is sunny and tomorrow too but rain will return! Sigh!

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

Saltwater tanks can be a lot of work but are delightful. The tank looks lovely now it’s clean.

Your tank is just like the ocean. No shellfish should be eaten during months without an R in the name because of the red algae tides! Of course now we farm them.
