Reading is Good for Your Health! Let’s Get Reading!

Did you know that reading is good for your health and that of your children. When a person reads his/her brain sparks alive with creativity, memory improves, an all over good feeling chases away the blues and all your troubles. You escape to a different place and time.

According to a research on activebeat.com: Overall, the data showed that participants who read a book for just 30-minutes per week reported greater overall life happiness, satisfaction, and social connectedness.

Let’s get reading everyone! How many books do you and your children read each month?

Children’s Books PS-Grade 3

When my children were young I took them to the library to get their first library cards. We returned each week and took out 3-4 books which I read to them each day or night. They began to expect to have more books each week. We took out more the following week and so on.

At the same time I also took out five books per week for myself. I showed my children that I also loved to read. This only encouraged them to want to read more too. I continued to do this as they were older by reading their books too and discussing together what we read individually. I managed to read all the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Mysteries during that time. That is probably why I began the mystery series for girls and boys, Davey & Derek Junior Detectives Series and Abby & Holly Series for middle-graders, preteens, and young adults.

Of course that didn’t last beyond their preteens when they did not want me to read their books anymore. I went back thereafter to just reading the books I took out for myself. Sigh!

What do you do to encourage your children to read? If children see their parents reading all the time they will pick up books too out of curiosity to see what you are reading.

Growing up I loved to read. If I was sad or unhappy about something I would lose myself in a book like 1984 which I read again in 1984 to see if it fit the time. It was certainly way beyond its time back then.

I always loved books like Pride and Prejudice and anything by Agatha Christie. I liked getting swept away into their lives to escape mine which was quite boring. I imagined what it would be like to live in their times instead of mine.

Whatever you enjoy reading keep it up for reading will enhance your life in so many wonderful ways. It makes one think about things and opens one’s mind to possibilities. I so love to read. There is never a time that I do not have one or two books open to enjoy. There are millions of choices on Amazon and elsewhere to choose from. I hope that you will chose some of my books for yourself and your children. I would be most appreciative and honored also if you do a review even if it is only two words – such as GREAT BOOK! LOVED THIS! WONDERFUL READ! ENJOYABLE BOOK! or whatever else you want to say about them. Thank you!

If you read my blog regularly you will know that I read and review several books each month in my Monthly Reads and Reviews. I love sharing my thoughts with you about books I have read whether I enjoyed them or not.

When I am looking for a new book to read I always check the reviews on Amazon before purchasing. Amazon doesn’t care if you have 50 one, two or three star reviews they will promote your book and spread word about it. Of course we authors love the four and five star reviews but welcome any reviews from readers. I usually will not purchase a book if I see too many negative comments about it. So you see, words are powerful and can affect the outcome of a purchase.

Watch for new books coming from Jemsbooks soon. Please keep reading and reviewing and I will keep writing joyfully! I can’t imagine doing anything else that makes me as happy!

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post. Please come back again. You are always welcome. Thank you also for your kind support and for any reviews you may post.

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

I so agree. reading is so good for you. Reading got many people of all ages through the two years of the pandemic for instance. Reviews are great and we all welcome them but I don’t often read the reviews until after I’ve read the book. I just read a book I loved, wrote a review and then read other reviews on Goodreads, many of which were not favourable. Oh well, we all have different tastes.

That is so true about reviews. I have enjoyed some books with terrible reviews. We all have different tastes and do not agree on books. Thanks for stopping by! 💕

  2. A lovely article about reading with children, Janice. I was very like you, I read to my children every day for years. I didn’t read Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew to them, although I read them myself, but we read all the Enid Blyton books including Famous Five and Secret Seven.

    • jjspina says:

That’s great, Robbie! I never read Blyton’s books but my mg books have been compared somewhat to hers which is an honor to me. Thank you for stopping by! 💕

  3. Reading rocks! Our folks read to us. All of us read to my brother’s kids. We send books to my brother’s grandchildren!

  4. I always looked forward to trips to the library as a child, it was a weekly treat. My mother took me every Tuesday after school. I can still remember the smell of the place – the wonderful smell of books!

    • jjspina says:

I know what you mean. I remember the smell too of the place and books. It made me feel nostalgic, comfy and warm being surrounded by all the books. It felt like a safe place to be where a pin could drop and you could hear it! Hugs xx
