Sebas Jr. the Hermit Crab is at it again!

Having a hermit crab is exciting. Sebas Jr. is always into something. Lately John has been dropping clams into the tank for him to eat. Hermit crabs like to hunt for their food and especially love shellfish like clams. We purchase clams from the fish market and freeze them for him to enjoy anytime. Some times we give him a fresh one right away like today.

Some of the fish like Wrasse above and Trigger love clams too. They will attack a clam unless Sebas gets it first. The crab is tenacious and will not let go of the clam until he has cleaned it out completely. It is something to see when they fight over it. He always wins though.

Here is Trigger trying to get at the clam.

I snapped some photos of Sebas feeding on a clam. One larger clam is still alive but is too difficult to open. The fish have tried to crack it and did – notice the crack on the shell from them attacking it to try and open it to feast. They won’t give up and eventually will be successful in devouring it.

There is always something going on in the tank. We are lucky to capture some things by accident as we pass by the tank. Most of the time everyone gets along well until the food is introduced and they fight over it. Sigh! There is plenty for all.

Notice the fish are looking at me for food!
They were disappointed when I snapped this second photo since I didn’t give them anything to eat.

Sebas Jr. is now asleep for awhile. He will wake up later during the night and clean the bottom of the tank again looking for some scraps. The rest of the fish are fast asleep when he does this. He is at the back of the tank under some live rocks so I couldn’t get a photo of him.

He has molted once already. That means he is growing. I just hope he doesn’t outgrow the present shell before we can get a larger one for him. Yikes!

I hope you enjoyed learning about our hermit crab. It is fascinating to watch Sebas in action and interacting with the other inhabitants of the tank.
