The Case of the Mysterious Black Cat is the second book in the Davey & Derek: Junior Detectives series written by Janice Spina. With their mother having just started working full time and their older brother working part time after school, ten-year-old non-identical twins and junior sleuths, Davey and Derek, are now required to be supervised by elderly Aunt Grisela (aka Gigi) and Uncle George each day after school. Having travelled the world during their long lives, Gigi and George had collected many souvenirs and artifacts, which the twins marvel over. After noticing Gigi’s black cat, Mianna, looking back at them from Gigi’s crystal ball, Davey and Derek decide to solve the mystery which surrounds the cat. It does not take long to determine that Gigi is gifted with magical powers which have been passed down to each set of twins in her blood line, making Davey and Derek the next in line. When Davey wakes one night, screaming, after dreaming of Mianna, who’d tried in vain to convey an urgent warning that Jenny (the Deaf younger sister of their best friend Mickey) is in danger, it takes every trick in the book to save Jenny when she disappears.

The backstories about Davey, Derek and Mickey are well covered at the beginning of the book, enabling the reader to know the most important details of the main players in the story. It impresses me that Janice Spina wants her readers to have the full advantage of character details to be able to connect with them more, without forcing the reader to buy earlier books in order to do so. The addition of magic to the mystery was a big twist which gave an extra huge element of excitement, adventure and super possibilities for the twins’ future cases which need to be solved. I found The Case of the Mysterious Black Cat to be an excellent magical tale and very much look forward to Davey and Derek’s next adventure. The author’s writing and imagination are incredible. I recommend this book to those in the 7-12 age group, or even the young at heart who love a little bit of magic served up with their mystery.

Here are all the books in the series. (Book 2 has old cover here. I will have it updated with new cover shortly on this promo by my husband, John.)

Each book is a stand alone story with the same characters. They can be read in any order but I always say – begin with Book 1 to get the full flavor of the characters as they grow in maturity.

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!
