INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR LESLIE HACHTEL!

Leslie HachtelLeslie Hachtel

Please help me welcome author Leslie Hachtel to Jemsbooks Blog Segment, Interview an Author.

Nice to meet you Leslie. Thank you for coming today.

The floor is all yours.

When did you know that you wanted to be an author?
For as long as I can remember, I have always made up stories. Then one day, years ago, I was cleaning my house and I thought: I can go change the sheets now or I can write a book. So, I sat down and wrote a novel. Granted it was awful, but it ignited my passion.

jjspina: The sheets can always wait but the muse can’t.

What process do you need in order to write?

I don’t really have a process per se. I just need an idea, a keyboard and time.

jjspina: I guess that’s essentially what is needed, especially time.

What projects are you currently working on?
Right now I am working on an anthology that is set in the 1870’s entitled “Grave Importance”. It is a departure from my usual romances. It will be eight separate stories, each author using the same setting, theme and premise. It’s dark and full of murder, intrigue and twists. It is due out December 10 from Perfectly Poisoned Anthologies and I am very excited about it.
I am also working on Book Two of the Morocco series (Catherine’s story).

jjspina: That new books does sound intriguing.

What hobbies do you have when you are not writing?
I have three hobbies. I sew, paint (acrylics on canvas) and I make jewelry. When I need to step away from the writing to plot or develop characters, these other activities clear my mind. Also, the jewelry works great to give as presents.

jjspina: That’s wonderful – three other passions!

jjspina: This is quite an impressive list of books, Leslie.

What advice would you give prospective authors?
Believe in yourself, in your work and don’t give up. Believe me, I know that is easier said than done. Writing is a solitary endeavor and the world is not always very kind. But you can never make a basket if you don’t shoot the ball.

jjspina: Good analogy!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would love to spend time in a Scottish castle, to experience history first hand and get a taste of how some of the people lived years ago. Or, walk through Ireland and absorb the landscape. Or go back to Rome and sit in a plaza, drinking in the sights. Or…

jjspina: Ahh, so many lovely places to go – hope you get to them one day.

What would you do if you were not a writer?
I would work at a zoo. I spent 18 years as a licensed veterinary technician and I do miss working with animals. And if I could do that again, I would want to be around giraffes and elephants and all the exotic creatures. Just don’t tell my dog.

jjspina: That must have been a fascinating job. I love elephants, giraffes are pretty cute too. Dogs know more than you think! Haha!
