Interview with Author Kathy Rollinson!

Me

It is a pleasure to introduce Kathy Rollinson, author of fantasy and murder genre. Thank you, Kathy, for coming today to share your fascinating books with my readers and me.

PLEASE TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF.

My name is Mrs Kathy Rollinson, I write under K J Rollinson. I was born in Salford, Lancashire,UK, moved to Wales aged 12 and also lived in Berkshire.Despite leaving school without any qualifications, I gained A levels and professional awards through the ensuing years.

I worked for many years for the National Health Service, taking various positions with health authorities within England and Wales, but now live in Spain.

My short stories have appeared in various publications, and anthologies, including the award winning ‘Shorts for Autumn,’ awarded by the Writing Magazine in 2014.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU WANTED TO BE AN AUTHOR?

I must have been about eight. I remember my first story was about a big yacht, at least 20ft long!! I also remember writing my first poem called ‘Pictures in the Fire’ – that was when we used to have coal fires. But it was not until I joined Wordplay Writers’ Forum, Spain, and one of the members has a publishing firm, that I thought to publish on Amazon.

WHAT PROCESS DO YOU NEED IN ORDER TO WRITE?

I live on my own, so I have peace and quiet. Usually I get up at 5 am and after going through my emails I write for a few hours, leaving the rest of the day free for my other hobbies.

PLEASE SHARE YOUR BOOKS WITH US AND A SYNOPSIS OF EACH

SYNOPSIS OF THE ‘FALLYN TRILOGY’

‘Fallyn and the Dragons.’ Allan, his twin sister, Eileen, together with two friends, are persuaded by a mysterious figure, Dorius, The Keeper of Dreams, to enter a medieval dream world. They are aware of their visits, and use their thoughts to overcome the many problems they encounter, helped by friendly dragons.

They go to the aid of King Rudri of Nashta, against his evil brother, Prince Bato.

‘Fallyn in the Forbidden Land’ In the medieval dream world on the Island of Nashta, the friends are known as Lord Fallyn, Lady Eila, Lord Merin, and Lady Kalla. The problems faced in the real world often reflect those they face in the dream world. They use teamwork to overcome the difficulties encountered in both worlds.

They meet a race of little people, known as Chougans, who breed colourful, little dragons.

Are the Chougans responsible for the red dragons attacking Nashta?

‘Fallyn and the Sea Dragons’

The third and final book continues the adventures of Allan/Fallyn, Eileen/Eila, Martin/Merin, Carla/Kalla.

They meet a charismatic, handsome pirate captain.

In an exciting climax, all dilemmas are resolved in the real world and the dream world.

The books are not merely about how good triumphs over evil. The four friends, through the course of their adventures, grow closer and the sub-plots between the main characters provide additional intrigue.

SYNOPSIS OF ‘A TWIST OF FAIRY TALES’

‘A Twist of Fairy Tales’ is a fabulous book for modern trendy children, 6 – 10 years. Five of the stories, Little Scarlett Hudson, The Ugly Duckling, Jack and the Beanstalk, Miss Goldie Locks, Cinderella, are brought up to date without losing any of the magic of the classical stories.

The author has written four completely new fairy tales that will enchant the reader. ‘Fairies and Unicorns, My Funny Valentine, Shrimp, and Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer.

Enchanting pictures are included in the contents pages, with a brief description of the nine tales, together with a full-page illustration at the beginning of each story.

The Rode to Justice

SYNOPSIS OF ‘THE RODE TO JUSTICE (JOHN RODE, 1ST GRADE DETECTIVE, MURDER STORIES)’

The book contains four murder stories, ‘Little Josie,’ ‘Dr Lister – I presume,’ ‘Courting Justice,’ and ‘The Dancing Queen.’

John Rode is a middle-aged cop who knows New York like the back of his hand. He is a widower, known as ‘old blue eyes’ to his work-colleagues. As he says, not because he can sing, but if his eyes were any paler he would have to carry a white stick.’

He is into Shakespeare when he has any free time, and has a strong sense of justice. In one story he says, ‘This is a Court of Law, not a Court of Justice.’

HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH IDEAS FOR YOUR STORIES?

I used to go to an art class, and a friend had drawn a picture of a very proud dragon. I wrote a 500-word story for her, and the ‘Fallyn Trilogy’ grew from there.

‘A Twist of Fairy Tales’ came from a group I belong to, part of the U3A, of which I am a member, (University of the Third Age). The leader of the group, gave us an exercise to write a modern story based on ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, which, with some alterations, is contained in ‘A Twist of Fairy Tales.’ Once I started, my imagination took flight on fairy wings, and I wrote another eight stories.

‘The Rode to Justice (John Rode, 1st grade detective, murder stories).’  Wordplay Writers’ Forum, which I have mentioned earlier, asked members to write murder stories based in New York. We had to pick out of a hat, what our victim/s died of. I picked poison. I had to do a lot of research for this – about poison – New York, and the police.

WHAT PROJECTS ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

I am really excited about my latest project. The Wordplay Writers’ Forum, has devised a competition, open to anyone, details found at www.WordplayPublishing.com

A founder member of Wordplay died a few years ago called Ian. He always said that he had never read book where the main character was called Ian. So the main character has to be called Ian, and into social issues. Apart from these criteria the book can be on any subject. My character goes to Eritrea, East Africa that has been torn by wars and famine, to help. My book is called, ‘Where Lies My Heart’.

WHAT DO EXPECT TO ACCOMPLISH IN 2015?

When I have finished ‘Where Lies My Heart’ I intend to enter the above-mentioned competition. Here is the synopsis of the book.

‘WHERE LIES MY HEART’

ACTION.   ADVENTURE.   ROMANCE.

Against an exotic backdrop of war-torn East Africa, ‘Where Lies My Heart’ charters the life of Ian Cornwell, from a boy to a man.

Even as a young boy Ian is drawn to help his fellow man. His strength of character, however, has one flaw – his weakness? Women. A handsome man, he attracts women like flies to a honey pot.

Following two disastrous romances, he goes to Eritrea, East Africa. Here he meets a woman he truly loves, only to lose her when she is abducted by Jihad rebels. His one regret all of his life that he never told her he loved her.

Together with an Eritrean family he flees from the despot Eritrean government only to find their situation worsens.

The rich tapestry cleverly weaves fact and fiction in a fast-moving plot. Traversing a vast panorama from the suburbs of Birmingham, UK, to East Africa, through the countries of  Eritrea, Sudan, crossing the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. The story encompasses the traditions and beliefs of different cultures, including female circumcision, still practiced in many parts of Africa.

Filled with exciting action, ‘Where Lies My Heart’ will thrill readers and make their imaginations and hearts soar.
