Books Read and Reviewed in March 2024!

Here it is already the end of another month. Where does the time go? I have been busy as usual reading some wonderful books for the month of March of 2024. Here are the 6 books I read and reviewed for March. I might have read even more if I didn’t have a few WIP. But I always seemed to have a WIP! That fact never stops me! I hope you enjoy reading these reviews.

I love sharing my eclectic reads in this Jemsbooks Segment, Books Read in the Month. I hope you will get a chance to look over these books soon. Thank you for your kind support of my work and that of my fellow authors.

If you are an avid reader, as I am, please review the books you love on Amazon or wherever you purchased them for others to enjoy your reviews. Reviews are one way for readers to know about an exceptional book. We indie authors love to receive reviews and appreciate the efforts of readers to do them. Once again, I thank you for your kind support of me and my books and for supporting my fellow authors too.

When I wrote these reviews I rated them on Amazon, Goodreads and sometimes Barnes & Noble. I did not include the ratings here though. It is best to share my thoughts with you about how I felt about the book without the rating. Ratings can be deceiving at times.

We all feel differently about books. Sometimes we love them, sometimes we like them and still other times we may dislike a book. Some others are so memorable they take our breaths away! While still others are sweet, sensitive, and enjoyable reads that we soon will forget. But all these books I have reviewed were lovely reads as you can see from my reviews. I hope you enjoy my reviews and that they will help you to decide what will be your next read.

An enjoyable read though long involving the law, drugs, prostitution, gambling and the seedier side of life in Biloxi. The story involves two boys who grew up together, played ball and were friends who went their separate ways in life.

Both boys follow in their fathers’ footsteps, one, Keith, becomes a lawyer while the other, Hugh, takes on jobs in his father’s casinos, gambling, getting involved with the wrong people and soon becoming a robber and killer.

There are timelines describing both men’s lives, how they ended up so differently from their early beginnings. This book could have been split into two stories with the length and detail that was in it.

Book 2 in the By the Sea Series finds the main protagonist, Maggie, getting acclimated to her new home in an island in Hawaii with her son, Charlie. She is running from her past life and a boyfriend who she fears will find her.

Maggie has the support of her close friend Quinn who has her own past that threatens to tear her family apart. Together they try to manage their lives and move forward.
But things don’t always work out for life isn’t fair.

An enjoyable read that makes the reader want to visit the beautiful island and experience the peaceful and tranquil life there. I look forward to the next book in this series as the story continues.

Lucy in the Sky continues the story of the Gray family and all their problems. Detective Taylor Gray once again tries to fix all the issues that befall her family which threaten to tear them apart.

Taylor discovers something unbelievable and works to solve this new issue and bring closure before presenting it to her sisters and father. She only hopes the secret she is keeping from them is not uncovered before she can remedy the situation.

The youngest sister Lucy is dealing with her angst as she finds herself thrust into an art scam with no way out. She tries to help a woman who is also trapped but discovers things are not what they seem.

There are two stories within this book that keep the story gripping and intriguing. I don’t want to give anything away but thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend this series by this talented author.

Windflower is back again in this addition of the Winston Windflower Mysteries. Reading this series is like taking a deep cleansing breath and feeling relaxed and happy while visiting with Windflower and his family and workmates in lovely Newfoundland.

The Sargent is on a new case and pulled into his former position as his supervisor sees the need for Windflower’s expertise in solving crimes and catching the perpetrators in his calm and polished manner. He and Tizzard, his former employee, work together to bring some closure to drug problems and murders that are linked.

I love the food and recipes that Windflower uses throughout the book along with the different quotes of famous writers that added meaning and substance to each scene.

Mike Martin created another enjoyable book in this Windflower Mystery Series.

Lights Out was full of characters who had issues as well as Kate Green, a former Olympic athlete and the main protagonist, tries to get her life together but finds that it is constantly tested with all kinds of negative issues that threaten not only her work but also her family.

Kate’s best friend is a suspect when her famous husband, an NBA superstar, is murdered. Kate tries to help her friend but finds herself drawn into the drama surrounding this case, especially when her estranged father, a NY detective, is brought on the case.

There are other suspects but the police do not veer from the main suspect, the wife, even though Kate finds overwhelming evidence against one other person. She finds her life is falling apart and is at odds with not only her friend but also her father who doesn’t trust her judgment in this case.

An enjoyable read as Kate Green becomes quite a tenacious sleuth.

Big Sky was a difficult book to get into with its myriad characters and the jumping between these characters in each chapter that got thoroughly confusing. Some parts of this story did not jell and didn’t appear to be part of the story which totally was befuddling. I almost stopped reading at this point.

I did enjoy some of the story that involved the main protagonist, Jackson Brodie, who was involved in so many aspects of these myriad characters that it was a little far-fetched. I stayed with the story only because I wanted to know what happened to the women who were trafficked and the perpetrators who were responsible for this heinous crime. It was a depressing subject to read about – the abuse of women.

This was the 5th book in this series. I don’t plan to purchase any more of this series or anything else from this author. It was disappointing to me. I did rate it higher than I should have only because I liked the ending.

Most of these books I would highly recommend. You can see which one I did not. But this is only my opinion. I always finish a book even if I don’t particularly enjoy it. I think there was only one book many years ago that I did not finish. I cannot remember the name of it now. I suffer through a book until I finish it nowadays and try not to give out any less than four stars, if I can help it.

You can see which books above I really enjoyed by how many books by that author I read. I don’t always read a complete series until it piques my interest. I hope you enjoyed my reviews and will come back again next month for more.

Thank you for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Come back anytime.

Happy Easter and Passover!

May you receive all the blessings today and everyday from God. Hope you have a happy and blessed Easter and Passover. I pray for all those who are homeless and have no one to love and care for them. May HE watch over them today and every day.

Here are some tulips to brighten your day that my daughter gave me! They brought a smile to my lips and a joy to my heart. I feel blessed.

As I get older I feel that life is mostly behind me now and I strive to appreciate even more each day that HE gives me here on Earth. Many days I need a BRANYRD (my angel in my series) in my life to watch over. I hope someone is.

I recently took a fall and have a few scraps and a lump on my knee (hematoma) which (the doctor said) could take up to 6 months to be absorbed by my body. It is going down a little. I must learn not to rush around so fast since my equilibrium is not as good as it used to be. I am still moving and grooving but at a slower pace. I was fortunate not to suffer any broken bones. It did shake me up a little when I knew I was falling due to slipping and turning too fast on a rug. Why does it feel like you are falling in slow motion? Strange! We have since put carpets down that are smaller and have slip proof padding underneath. Sigh!

Thank you for stopping by to read this post. I pray that you are fortunate enough to have family and friends to spend time on Easter that love and support you. We all need that. I feel blessed to have a loving family who I will be spending the day with and plenty of food, fun and love. Can’t get enough of that. God bless you all!

Gateskin 3 is finished – now time to edit!!

It is always a good feeling to complete a book but at the same time sad to see it end. In series like this, Gateskin Chronicles, a fantasy/adventure, the story continues until the series ends. I plan to have six books at the completion, fingers crossed, as long as the characters have more tales to tell.

Now that I typed THE END I need to get busy with editing and polishing it up before I give it to my Beta Readers Extraordinaire. They work hard to read, review and send me their notes and suggestions. I value their assistance and the time it takes to do this.

Watch for book 3 coming in the next month or two. In the meantime, wet your appetite by grabbing books 1 & 2 and get into the adventures, fantasy, magic, and mayhem of Gateskin and his world. You will enjoy yourself, I assure you!

This is Book 1 of a fantasy series that will have six books in all. In this book learn about the three children of King Gateskin and his wife, Queen Solinara. The children have had powers since they were quite young.

Serena was three years old when she learned of her power to move objects with her mind. Her brother, Simon, can fly and their sister, Catalina, can become invisible or blend into her surroundings. They live with their parents in Sovorotskina, the Land of Light.

With these powers comes responsibility. The children must try to use their powers for the common good and responsibly to help others. The three children befriend a Sprite named Spindle who accompanies them on their adventure. Along the way they meet up with their aunt and uncle, their mother’s brother and his wife, Wizard Hotenfaran and Fairy Procelina. The group must travel into the evil land of Parotovina, Land of Darkness, to save King Gateskin, who was kidnapped, and also rescue some of the descendants of their friends and fellow Sovorotskinans who were captured and taken by the Evil Ones. These descendants have been waiting a long time to be free to return to the villages of their ancestors.

The children have many trials and adventures along the way. Will they be able to rescue their father and fellow Sovorotskinans without endangering their own lives? Will the evil King Kaposkaran and his Queen Beregina stop Serena and her siblings from being successful or will they turn Serena and her siblings to their dark ways?

The adventures continue in this addition of Gateskin Chronicles. Many new characters and creatures are introduced. Spells abound with magic all around. Many visitors come to Sovorotskina looking for asylum from the evil King Kaposkaran of Parotovina. Will King Gateskin accept them all or even be able to trust them not to be spies for the evil King?

Serena uses her powers to assist when wolves come their way. Other creatures are also about and threaten the safety of the village.

Kaposkaran finds himself in trouble when his village is attacked by creatures. Will he turn to Gateskin for help? If he does, what will Gateskin do?

There is a spy about in Sovorotskina. Will the spy be discovered and somehow stopped from undermining the magic of King Gateskin and his family?

There are many facets to creating a story no matter what genre you choose. The first thing I do is create a title and then I work a story around the title. I know that sounds like I am doing things backwards. But this is how I create each story – from a title. Once the title is in my head, the story weaves itself around the title and the story begans to flow. Without a title I am like a ship without a sale, a boat without an oar, a skateboard without its wheels, etc. I could go on forever. Ha!

Once the title is chosen and the story progresses, more characters pop up and want to be part of the mix. After conclusion of the book comes the editing phase which entails several read throughs, more work than the entire book, at least to me. After editing and polishing is complete, I contact my Jemsbooks Beta Readers to alert them that the book is finished and ready for their eager, eagle eyes. Once they send back their notes I began again to edit some more. Then comes the publishing phase and of course obtaining an LCCN, the copyrighting, claiming the ISBN on Bowker, and finally going to Amazon for the paperback and kindle completion. So many channels to travel through and then onto promoting and marketing the book! I can’t believe I have done this with 45 books so far. No wonder I am exhausted and not getting any younger! Sigh! I need an assistant but can’t afford one! (bigger SIGH)

With this series a title comes out of thin air once I begin the next book. Of course, there is enough information within the text to create one if one doesn’t come to me. I am already thinking about the next title of book 4 and now one for book 4 of Branyrd the Angel Series, which I will be working on next. I could hop right into book 5 of Gateskin Chronicles but Branyrd has been nagging me to pick up her story next. She cannot wait any longer. Her stories are much quicker to write anyway than this fantasy/adventures series with myriad characters, creatures and magic.

This has been a fun series to write to let my imagination go wild. I feel the same about the angel series, for it is a fantasy/spiritual/good-feeling read. If you haven’t read either series, I hope you will check them out soon. You don’t have to be a believer in angels, just a reader who likes to feel good after reading a book. I guarantee that you will good and maybe weep a little too while you cheer on the efforts of Branyrd. In Gateskin you will cheer on Spindle, the children and maybe even a creature or two as they meet each new challenge.

Isn’t that what books are for – to take us away from our troubles, worries and challenges in life? If we can escape all of that for a little time each day we will feel better about life in general. A few tears wipe away the stress that life can bestow on us. With my books you will feel relief from your worries with satisfying endings and surprises that will keep you coming back for more. Happy Reading and stay happy!

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Please keep those reviews coming! They are like early Christmas or birthday gifts to me that keep on giving! I feel blessed and honored to receive them.

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

A sad day – we lost our Puffer Boxfish!

We recently lost our sweet Puffer Boxfish who was doing well. We don’t know why he died but suspect it could have something to do with the work we have been doing in our home with painting and sanding. Maybe some of this somehow got into the tank and Puffer ingested it since he swims at the top of the tank. All the other fish did not have any problems.

The anemone did have a little upset but it appears to be getting better with the help of his buddy, the Maroon Clown Fish who has been swimming in and out of it trying to revive it. It is sweet to see in action. I took this video so you could see Clown in action. When he thought it was dying he did all he could to help it and really looked like he was upset.

The other fish were not allowed to go near the anemone because of Clown who keep watch over it and protected it until he could be revived enough to seat itself safely again. It was an amazing thing to witness. We were worried that Clown might die from loneliness and if the anemone died. Thank goodness it did not.

Even though these are only fish, they are our pets and when we lose one we feel the loss maybe not as much as losing a cat or dog or other animal but it still hurts.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post. We feel sad to have lost Puffer but are relieved that the anemone and Clown are doing okay.

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

A Lamby for Easter – Lamby the Lonely Lamb!

Are you looking for that special book to give to your little ones this holiday season? Look no further – Lamby the Lonely Lamb is one that they will love. It is recommended by @MomsChoiceAwards! This is a perfect gift instead of all the candy children get that only lasts for a day, if that. This book will give them hours of enjoyment daily and they will learn something new each time they read it or it is read by you to them. Happy Reading and God Bless!

MOM’S CHOICE AWARDS – SILVER MEDAL!

Lamby is a very different lamb because of his color. He is lonely and only wants to be accepted by the other lambs. Find out what lesson Lamby learns when a little girl, Leah, comes to the farm where Lamby lives.

I wrote this book many years ago for my three-year-old granddaughter who had a stuffed lamb. She took it everywhere with her and called it Lamby. I bought it for her one day while we were out shopping in a mall. She spied it and grabbed it not wanting to let it go. I bought it on the spot and her mother bought a second one just like it in case the first one ever got lost. One day she couldn’t find Lamby and my daughter brought out the second one. My granddaughter knew right away that it was her Lamby. Eventually Lamby was found and all was well. I think she still has it to this day, and she is now a teen.

Writing for children is pure joy for me. What makes me the happiest is that I love to see children enjoying my books and getting many hours of learning and encouragement by the important life lessons I instill in each of my books. I think parents are happy about this too.

I hope if you haven’t checked this book out yet that you will this Easter season. It will instill important life lessons for young children – it’s okay to be different, be kind to others, and believe in yourself – that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your kind and continued support. Please feel free to come back any time. You are always welcome.

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

WIP – Coming along – more work to do!

I can’t believe all the things that have gotten in the way of my working on my latest project. That’s life! With the myriad updates that we are doing in our home, I haven’t found time to write at all. I barely get a moment to post here. Soon things will slow down and I will be able to get back to work. Sigh!

I hope you had a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day celebration – where everyone is Irish, wears green and eats and drinks things that are green! We had a delicious corned beef, potatoes, carrots and cabbage dinner with friends. Our best ever corned beef, lean and tasty.

Keep watch for Book 3 of Gateskin Chronicles that will have some new characters and creatures to surprise you. My characters are upset with me since my fingers have not touched the keys of my laptop over a couple of weeks now and may not get much time to write this coming week either.

We have more projects to complete in our home which makes me feel like I have a new home without moving. I didn’t realize how much work would be involved in redoing a few rooms. It almost felt like we were moving since we had to move everything out of one room as it was being done and then moving everything back in. I will be happy when it is all done. My back is aching and will be relieved too.

The surprising thing with my WIP is that even though I may be away from the story for a while my fingers will pick up the pace and get right into the story again. I think my characters will probably be sending me vibes about what they want me to write. I am just along for the ride.

Looking for adventures, myriad characters, magic, strange creatures, fairies, wizards, mystery, and surprises? Check out Gateskin Chronicles today!

To keep you intrigued here are the book trailers I created using Animoto.

Here are some reviews from Amazon using AllAuthor.com promos:

Thank you for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. I hope you will keep watch for the newest book in this adventure series coming this year. I don’t want to saw soon because I don’t know exactly when I will be finished with all the editing that I plan to do and the eyes of my beta readers are waiting for it.

Please review books that you love or not for all the hard-working authors out there who will love you for your efforts.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Each year on St. Patrick’s Day we are all Irish. (Compliments of free photos from Wikipedia and Oip.)

Here’s a little poem for this green day that I wrote several years ago and just updated.

HAVE A HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY

by Janice Spina

We can cook up some fried fish.

We can all wear green.

Happy St. Pat's Day pic

While we eat a boiled dinner with corned beef very lean.

corned beef and cabbage

Drink green beer and eat potato chips.

Maybe with some delicious green dips.

Dessert will be green cupcakes and cake too.

It just has to be green or it just won’t do.

Green candies

What we may forget is that we are all the same inside.

No matter what nationality you are, wear your ethnicity with pride.

Have a wonderful Day with family and friends!

May the Luck of the Irish visit you today!

And whisk all the back luck away!

Review of Branyrd the Angel Book 3: Mission of Love!

I was pleased to receive this lovely review recently from a reader for which I am happy to share.

In Mission of Love, the third book in the charming series, our hero angel, Branyrd, has to help a small island in the South Pacific fend off attacks by neighboring Islands. Will she be able to complete her mission and save the orphans? You’ll have to read more to find find out. Come along with Branyrd as she and her very own Guradian Angel, Benedicto face difficult challenges and daunting choices along the way. A great addition to this series.

Branyrd is on another mission which may be the toughest one so far. She has been sent to a troubled island in the South Pacific that is being attacked by the fellow islands in the archipelago. Her mission is to rescue some children from an orphanage during the attacks.

She is escorted, once again, by her Guardian Angel, Benedicto, who is there as counsel and aide as she completes her mission. What Branyrd finds there is devastation and heartbreak as she tackles the mission, this time one of love for the children and the rest of the islanders who have lost family and homes.

There are many obstacles that stand in her way and danger for the children and others as she must rescue not only them, but also another island that is in danger of sinking.

It’s always a joyful experience to read positive reviews that lift my spirits and spurn me on to write some more. Thank you, reader, for sharing your thoughts about my book. I appreciate your efforts and the time you took to do this.

Please check out the other two books in this series for some heartwarming, sweet, and feel-good, touching, stories with a hint of humor that will make you laugh and cry along with Branyrd.

If you love a book or not, please leave a review wherever you purchased the book. Your words are one way to allow other readers to make a decision whether to read the book or not and it also helps spread word about books. Authors need your reviews and will love you for taking the time and making the effort to share their work online with others.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Come back again any time. You are always welcome.
