Taking a breather between books!

This year I hope I will have at least three books published before the year ends. I need to take a break from time to time especially after publishing my epic fantasy, Gateskin Chronicles Book 3: Search for the Medallion.

This series takes a lot out of me to write, edit and publish. It does feels so good when I put THE END to a book. Of course, I don’t rest long before I pick up another story to begin.

Since I have two series that I am presently working on, I am itching to get to the other one now for a break between genres. Once I complete these two series I have two other series titles that I can’t wait to begin. Is there any end to my madness? I guess not!

As long as I can keep getting these ideas from my muse and God’s help, I will work hard to bring you some new stories to enjoy. It gives me great pleasure to create new stories for my readers and fans.

Happy Father’s Day!

Here is a post for Father’s Day that I posted in 2020! It says all that I feel for my dad. I pray that all fathers out there had a wonderful day and were treated like kings.

image

This is my special dad!

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

Dad, you were a special man!

You were always there to lend a hand.

You treated us with kindness.

You were always fair.

You showed us how much you cared.

You wore a happy smile upon your handsome face.

And taught us how to appreciate God’s grace.

You made our lives so full and rich.

Teaching us to be good was your main pitch.

You would tease and joke.

While always a cigarette at your lips you would smoke.

You were talented with your hands.

Fixing and creating things on command.

You thought of others before yourself.

Your own troubles you put away on a shelf.

You left this world for a better place.

Leaving here on Earth a large empty space.

You gave us your love in every way.

I love you more than I can say!

I miss you more and more each day!

Happy Father’s Day with Love, Dad!

Your loving daughter,

Jan (my nickname by Dad)

I wish all the fathers out there a wonderful Father’s Day!

Here is another poem I wrote several years ago – WHAT IS A FATHER?

What is a father?

He is someone whose lap you can crawl onto and take a nap.

He is someone who reads you a story at bedtime.

He is someone who listens to you when you need a friend.

He is someone who picks you up and gives you a much needed hug.

He is someone who will play catch with you after you receive a new glove.

He is someone who will laugh at your poor jokes and tell some funny ones of his own.

He is someone who gives you a pat on your back for a job well done.

He is someone who says ‘I love you’.

He is someone who will give you money for your first date.

He is someone who will let you take his car for a drive right after you get your license.

He is someone you can call when you get into trouble.

He is someone who will listen to you and never lose patience.

He is someone who will never judge you unfairly.

He is someone who has taught you the difference between right and wrong.

And he is someone who one day you will treasure beyond reason when he is gone.

Love and appreciate your father while he is here for life is too short not to.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post. Thank you also for your kind support of me, my books and blog and for all the reviews you had posted wherever my books are sold. Keep reading and I will keep writing. Take care!

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

STRANGE THINGS HAPPEN!

Recently we noticed something strange on our front deck. It was a little horrifying in fact.

Here are some photos to share of this incident. I will explain what I can afterward.

My husband discovered this mess one morning and told me to go to the front door and look out. I didn’t know what I was going to find by the look on his face. I thought I was going to get a package that had been delivered and that maybe was destroyed by the shipper. I never expected to see this – feathers all over the deck. I was horrified and saddened to see this knowing that a bird did suffer. Sigh!

Evidently a bird, possibly a poult, young turkey, was attacked and killed on our front deck. Yuck! There was some blood and plenty of feathers and down feathers from a young bird. If it was a poult, I can’t believe that the mother turkey did not go after the animal that attacked her young.

We think it could have been a feral cat that did this. He hangs around our yard and neighborhood and is fed by some of our neighbors. Here is a photo of him that I took a long time ago.

Here is a photo above of turkeys and their poults that I took in the past. I hope most of these little guys got away.

This is a sad thing to see but I have plenty of animal stories to share with your children that will make you forget all about this sad thing. Please check them out today!

What is your favorite Jemsbooks Children’s Book?

I hope you have a favorite children’s book in my collection of 22 books. I can tell you that the most popular children’s book of mine sold on Amazon is Jerry the Crabby Crayfish.

Jerry captivates young children and adults with its rhymic prose, colorful illustrations and important life lessons that children learn as they read or that are read to them.

PINNACLE BOOK ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER!

Jerry is a crabby crayfish who all day long wishes he could be a fish. One day something happens in the fish tank that makes Jerry change his mind. Read about the valuable lesson Jerry learns.

Children love to read about real-life animals, their habitat, characteristics and what they eat. In this book I share my experience and photos of a real crayfish that we had as a pet in a fish tank. The real Jerry was indeed crabby and did a lot of the things that I mentioned in the book with a little embellishment.

It was fascinating to watch Jerry in action as he molted many times and stayed inside his shell to protect himself from the other inhabitants in the tank until he was stronger. We share photos of him and the cover is Jerry in action in his tank. He was every bit as beautiful as he appears in the cover. It was a sad day when he died. I was deepened saddened at his loss and had a difficult time explaining why Jerry was no longer in his tank to my grandchildren who came to love him too. We could never purchase another crayfish since then. They are no longer available.

Here are the life lessons your children will learn from my children’s books:

Louey the Lazy Elephant – Louey teaches children the importance of not being lazy and always listening to your mother.

Ricky the Rambunctious Raccoon – Ricky teaches children to always listen to their mother.

Clarence Henry the Hermit Crab – Clarence Henry teaches children to work hard and do the best you can do and be happy with who you are.

Make Believe is Fun: Bedtime Stories for Children Book 2: These six stories help children to realize the importance of friendship, family, helping others in need and that it’s okay to be different.

How important are Life Lessons in Children’s Books?

Do you consider life lessons in children’s book to be important? Why?

What life lessons do you want to see in the books that your children read?

What makes a children’s book unique?

I consider all of these questions when I create a children’s book. Once I have a main character (animal), I work to incorporate a few life lessons into the story. I also think it’s important to have unique and interesting characters that children will love such as baby animals.

The first book I wrote, Louey the Lazy Elephant, was about one of my favorite animals – elephants. Louey is a baby elephant who children will love. This is still my favorite book of all 22 children’s books because it was the first book my husband illustrated in this distinct coloring book style. He has wanted to update it on many occasions but I will not let him. I think it stands alone in its unique style reminiscent of many people’s coloring days. Please check it out and let me know if you agree. Recommended by Mom’s Choice Awards!

WINNER OF SILVER MEDAL – MOM’S CHOICE AWARDS 10/29/20

Louey is an adorable but lazy elephant who likes to sleep late. One day Louey wakes up to find that the whole herd has moved on without him. Louey is very upset but he is determined to find his herd. Does Louey find his way to his family and friends? Does he learn that it doesn’t pay to be lazy? Take Louey home with you and find out.

I think it is important that parents read to their children daily and discuss the books they read together. This is one way to see if your children are understanding the lessons they learn in each book. Children are surprisingly perceptive when it comes to this.

I often ask children in my family what lessons they learned from Louey and others characters in my 22 children’s books to see what they had to say. Many have answered that, ‘Louey should listen to his mother,’ and ‘He shouldn’t sleep too late or he won’t find his way by himself,’ and also, ‘Louey shouldn’t be lazy.’

Do you ask your children about what they read? Do they share their thoughts in this way too?

Here are the life lessons your children will learn from my children’s books:

Louey the Lazy Elephant – Louey teaches children the importance of not being lazy and always listening to your mother.

Ricky the Rambunctious Raccoon – Ricky teaches children to always listen to their mother.

Jerry the Crabby Crayfish – Jerry teaches children that it is okay to be different, be the best you can be and be happy with who you are.

Sebastian Meets Marvin the Monkey – Sebastian teaches children how important it is to be kind to animals, that animals have feelings too like humans and deserve our respect.

Colby the Courageous Cat – Colby teaches children to love one another and take care of their siblings.

Jeffrey the Jittery Giraffe – Jeffrey teaches children to be brave and help others in need.

I hope you will check out my children’s books if you haven’t already to help your children learn valuable life lessons that will stay with them for a lifetime.

A Recipe from Janice’s Kitchen Corner – Fruit Crisp!

I recently made this Fruit Crisp to bring to my sister’s house for a dinner invitation. I usually make apple crisp but since I did not have enough apples I checked my fridge to see what I could substitute. All I had were four nectarines, a handful of strawberries and blueberries. That would have to do.

Here is my recipe for FRUIT CRISP:

Ingredients:

  1. 4 or more nectarines
  2. Blueberries (handful or two)
  3. Strawberries (6-8)
  4. 2 Tbs white sugar
  5. 1/4 cup flour
  6. 1/2 brown sugar
  7. 1/2 cup oats
  8. 1/4 cup butter
  9. 1/4 tsp each of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg
  10. Dash or two of ground cloves
  11. 1/4 chopped walnuts

Directions:

  1. Peel and slice nectarines and place in 8 x 8 in glass baking dish
  2. Wash blueberries add to nectarines
  3. Wash and slice strawberries add to other fruit
  4. Sprinkle 1-2 Tbs of white sugar over fruit and toss together (I used one Tbs)

Prepare topping:

  1. Add oats, brown sugar, flour and spices to medium bowl
  2. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in nuts.
  4. Sprinkle topping over fruit.
  5. Bake in 375 degrees oven for 30 minutes
  6. Serve warm or cold with ice cream and/or whipped cream
  7. Enjoy!

At this writing I have not tasted it. Hope it is good. But it certainly looks and smells good! Let me know if you try it and like it or not.

For fruit crisp you can use any kind of fruit you like. Have fun creating your own combinations. Another time I may try apple and peach or nectarine together for a twist. Baking should be a fun adventure and memorable whether there are positive or negative results. My husband will eat whatever I make and be happy as long as he can have some ice cream with it!

Check out all my recipes on my pages – Janice’s Kitchen Corner for many recipes that I am sure you will enjoy. They are quick, easy and delicious. That’s how I like recipes, not too much work but I will receive rave reviews as if I slaved all day to make them.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Feel free to come back again any time.

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

A Favorite Meal to enjoy!

When the warm weather arrives, I always want to enjoy my favorite meal – Lobster, steamers and corn on the cob! What is your favorite meal?

We recently had this meal and will have it again on my birthday. My husband arranged the platter for my photo. It was absolutely delicious! The lobsters were hard shell and 1 1/2 lbs each. Delectable! Just looking at this meal I want to have it again! Yum!

We purchased the lobsters at a local Market Basket for a great price. We recently went to Perkin’s Cove Maine and had a lobster dinner with clams but no corn and it was not at all like this. It was, in fact, a disappointment. The lobster was supposed to be 1 1/2 lb but it was not. They also were softer shells with not as much meat in the claws.

It was a lovely visit to Maine, don’t get me wrong, but the lobsters were a disappointment. Sigh! I guess that proves that you don’t have to go too far to get a perfect lobster. But do visit Maine to enjoy the beautiful scenery, ocean views, and the lovely restaurants and shops.

I find it is much better to eat lobster at home since I take a long time to eat it and can make quite a mess in the process. I savor every mouthful but it is not a pretty sight.

The first time I had a lobster was when I was a young child. We used to visit my uncle and aunt in Maine and one day they had lobsters for dinner. I had no idea whether I would like them or not but fell in love with lobster back then. Each time we visited I looked forward to having another lobster. I have been hooked since then. I only have a lobster a few times a year but enjoy it every time.

I love anything from the ocean. I guess it might have something to do with my family upbringing. We often had fish after my father and grandfather went fishing and came home with fresh catch. There is nothing like fresh fish!

I’d love to hear what your favorite food is.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued kind support. Come back again soon. You never know what is brewing and stewing at Jemsbooks! Check out my recipes for my Portuguese Fisherman’s Stew and other recipes to wet your appetite for good food.

Everything is greening up!

Now that the weather is getting warmer all the time with plenty of rain in between, everything is greening up beautifully. I snapped a photo of the pond in the backyard. It looks so green and lush. The birds and other creatures love it. It provides shelter for all the animals.

I love to share this beauty with you all. The flowers will lift your spirits and brighten your day. They do that for me. May your day be filled with many good things. God Bless you all!

Here is a little rabbit that was visiting recently. I just caught him as he was racing away.

Here are all the flowers that are blooming like crazy – petunias, rhododendrons and roses.

I look forward to seeing the Rose of Sharon, all 17+ bushes, in bloom. They are quite a spectular sight to behold. Of course as always, I will share many photos of them. Each year we are have more than the year before. They keep sprouting up all over. I love them. I have gifted some to family and friends tto spread the beauty and love.
