Dragons, Dragons and More Dragons for Children!

Do your children love dragons? I have always loved dragons, dinosaurs and such. I find them fascinating. That is why I wrote this six-book series for children PS-Grade 3. These dinosaurs are kind, caring and not scary at all. They teach children valuable life lessons in fun, rhythmic prose along with colorful illustrations.

Books Read and Reviewed in July 2024!

Here it is already the end of another month. Where does the time go? I have been busy as usual reading some wonderful books for the month of July of 2024. Here are the 6 books I read and reviewed for July. I might have read even more if I didn’t have a few WIP. But I always seemed to have a WIP! That fact never stops me! I hope you enjoy reading these reviews.

I love sharing my eclectic reads in this Jemsbooks Segment, Books Read in the Month. I hope you will get a chance to look over these books soon. Thank you for your kind support of my work and that of my fellow authors.

If you are an avid reader, as I am, please review the books you love on Amazon or wherever you purchased them for others to enjoy your reviews. Reviews are one way for readers to know about an exceptional book. We indie authors love to receive reviews and appreciate the efforts of readers to do them. Once again, I thank you for your kind support of me and my books and for supporting my fellow authors too.

When I wrote these reviews I rated them on Amazon, Goodreads and sometimes Barnes & Noble. I did not include the ratings here though. It is best to share my thoughts with you about how I felt about the book without the rating. Ratings can be deceiving at times.

We all feel differently about books. Sometimes we love them, sometimes we like them and still other times we dislike a book. Some other books are so memorable they take our breath away! While still others are sweet, sensitive, and enjoyable reads that we soon will forget. But all these books I have reviewed were lovely reads as you can see from my reviews. I hope you enjoy my reviews and that they will help you to decide what will be your next read.

The Lies You Wrote is an intense mystery involving a family that is dysfunctional with a son who is suspected of murder of his parents while his sisters have been whisked away to protect them from the press and put them into foster care.

The main protagonist, Raisa Susanto, is a forensic linguist who is called in to assist with the case. She gets some help from her partner, Callum Kilkenny, who is a forensic psychologist. Together they worked to solve the case by reading messages, confessions and diaries left by the family.

The unexpected happens to Raisa and she finds her life in danger along with her partner and another player in the mix. There is a surprise ending in this book that was shocking not only to Raisa but to this reader too.

This was an enjoyable mystery that had many twists and turns and all the usual suspects to keep the reader engaged. I look forward to the next book in the series.

The Nightingale is an epic historical novel in France during WW11. It details the lives of two sisters, both heroic in their own way helping others to safety from the Nazi invasion. They persevere even though they are heartbroken over the death of their beloved mother and the abandonment of their father.

The story is detailed by one of the sisters throughout the story. We do not know which one is telling the tale until the end. The author bases the story on some heroic women who took many Allied soldiers over the Pyrenees to safety. While one sister takes this trek many times over, her sister is busy trying to keep her family together while her husband is fighting the war and protect all the children who have been abandoned or separated from their parents after they are arrested by the Nazis and taken away to work camps.

This is a tender, heart wrenching story that tells of the cruelty of the Nazis and how much the people who were oppressed by them suffered. It shows the tenacity and strength of the women who were left behind after their husbands went to war and the power of love to last through adversity.

I highly recommend this story but be prepared to have tissues ready. It is a heartbreaking tale.

The Astral Gatecrashers book 1 of the Bad Boy Wizard series is an enjoyable series for middle-graders and preteens. Even though I am not either of these I found this book to be intriguing as the myriad characters came on the scene and the main protagonist took front stage.

This is a creative series with all kinds of mayhem happening at every turn causing much havoc for Charlie, the bad boy wizard himself. The only thing wrong is that Charlie doesn’t know he can do magic until he meets a ghost of himself from the past who convinces him to try to perform some magic by changing a stuffed owl into a dog. Unfortunately, Charlie’s first try at magic is anything but successful, causing him to get into more trouble not only with his mother but also with his teachers at school.

The story continues with more mishaps for Charlie as he conjures up creatures that haunt him every chance they get, which gets him expelled from school and sent to his room by his mother for days. How will Charlie ever figure out how to send back these strange creatures to wherever they came from and get his mother to trust him again?

This is an enjoyable romp of a tale for middle-graders and preteens that will make them avidly anticipate the next installment of this fun series of adventures with the Bad Boy Wizard.

Last Night is an intriguing mystery where everyone is a suspect. A murder is committed, and a young child is missing. There just happens to be an out-of-town police officer on the premises of the hotel where the victim was found buried in a snowfall during a raging storm.

The authorities are unable to do very much with the storm and snow still falling heavily preventing them from finding any evidence. The out-of-town officer does what he can to assist the local police and manages to find more evidence than they do as he slowly pieces together a few items that he found buried in the snow near the victim’s body.

The number of suspicions increase and so does the mystery, creating an enjoyable read. I like the writing style of this author and look forward to more of her work.

After Death is a suspenseful story about a man who exhibits a Lazarus complex after dying in an event that killed all who were in the facility. The main character, Michael Mace, who is the head of security in this plant is the only one who comes back from the dead. His best friend was not as fortunate.

Michael has no idea how or why he died and was resurrected. All he knows is that he has powers that he did not have before to become a ghost in the sense that he can enter cyber space and understand how to control anything that is connected to computers. He befriends a woman and her son after his friend had mentioned that he wanted Michael to watch over her in case anything happened to him.

What transpires in this tale is everything that Michael must do to keep this woman and her son alive as the father of the boy chases them. What Michael doesn’t realize is that someone is also after him and has discovered his secret talents. Murder is what this dangerous adversary has in mind for Michael.

Lots of action, violence and tension ramps up as Michael races to save the woman and her son and also himself.

I enjoyed this book even after having not read any of Dean Koontz’s books for a long time. My favorite one of his though is still Intensity.

What I’ve Done is the fourth book in the Morgan Dane mystery, suspense series. This is a gripping story that kept me guessing as to who the killer was.

Morgan Dane is a fascinating character who is fearless and persistent in getting at the truth in all her cases as a lawyer. She will stop at nothing to fight for her clients’ innocence unless they are guilty.

Her latest client is a young woman who has been arrested for murder of a man when she is found with blood on her hands at the man’s home. She doesn’t remember what happened but can’t believe that she would have killed him.

There are so many suspects, twists and turns and unexpected events that happen to keep the readers wondering who, what, and why. There is also non-stop action with some romance thrown in for good measure. It kept me on the edge of my seat as each scene was played out.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable book and an excellent series that I will keep going back to for more adventure, suspense, and mystery. I highly recommend this series.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Come back again soon. You are always welcome.

Children’s chapter books – series for Ages 5-8!

Is it time for your children ages 5-8 to read chapter books? Hop on the Jemsbooks Express and find the right book for your children. Each of these four books carries important life lessons in six stories with colorful illustrations with approval by MCA – MomsChoiceAwards.com.

Created by John Spina C

MOM’S CHOICE AWARD WINNER – SILVER MEDAL!

This is a short story collection for children ages 5-8. They are perfect for bedtime or any time. They can be read by early readers or by a parent/guardian. They will provide a fun reading time for both the reader and the listener.

There are six stories with a colorful illustration of the characters of each story – one about an alien, a dragon, a fairy, a bear, a bear and a boy and a skunk. Each story will have life lessons for children to learn.

MOM’S CHOICE AWARD WINNER – SILVER MEDAL!

This is book 2 of the Bedtime Stories for Children Series. There are six tales with an illustration for each. Children will read about two squirrels, a turkey, a frog, a tree, a leopard and mouse, and a cat. These animal tales will delight children and become their favorite bedtime stories.

Each story carries life lessons that will help children understand about the importance of friendship, helping others in need, family, and it’s okay to be different.

MOM’S CHOICE AWARDS SILVER MEDAL WINNER!

Bedtime Stories for Children is back again with six more fun and entertaining stories for children ages 5-8. In this book children will read about a porcupine and a beaver, a snake, a deer, a fox and baby bluebird, a cow and a horse.

Each story carries important life lessons such as helping others in need, being kind to others, friendship is important, and it’s okay to be different.

MOM’S CHOICE AWARDS SILVER MEDAL WINNER!

The Bedtime Stories series is here once again with six more fun and entertaining stories for children ages 5-8. In this book children will read about a dragonfly, a goat, a candle, a chicken and a rooster, a boy and a pelican and a fish, and a starfish.

Each story carries important life lessons such as helping others in need, being kind to others, it’s okay to be different, family matters more than riches or being famous, friends are important, and be the best you can be.

Some of these stories were inspired by things that I have experienced, trips I have taken and animals that I have encountered. I explain in the books about each story and what inspired me to write each one.

I know the importance of family values and life lessons for children to learn early and often when they are young and the most impressionable. If children learn these lessons early they will stay with them for a lifetime as long as they are reinforced by the adults around them.

I hope if you haven’t checked out this series for your children you will do so soon. Reading chapter books helps to reinforce young children’s confidence and reading levels. They feel like they are more grownup too. Get your children reading today by reading yourself. Children respond to what their parents do and will imitate you.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Keep reading and I will keep writing to provide more entertaining books for you.

Flowers to cheer you!

I promised recently that I would share more photos of all the Rose of Sharon bushes we have more than 18 at this writing. They keep spreading each time we plant another one more sprout up all around it. Each flower looks different too. Check out these photos.

Plenty of bees, hornets, hummingbirds, butterflies and dragonflies all around. I had to dodge a couple while snapping these pics.

Here are other flowers on our back deck that are blooming in all their glory. I also added a couple of views of the pond in back of our house that is unbelievably overgrown. The condo association usually has it trimmed yearly but not at this time. Once it is done it does look neater and quite bare. I do love to see all the greenery but don’t like the invasive bittersweet vines that are growing profusely.

The pond is greening up but our lawns are browning, sad to say. That is the way it always is during the summer months with all the heat we have had.

I hope you have enjoyed my photos once again. The bushes are still not in full bloom only some of them are. The side of our house has ten bushes that are not blooming except for one. They were cut back quite far, that is why. As you can see they can grow quite high and large if not pruned in the fall. But they are glorious once the begin and then reach their fabulous potential of blooms.

Thank you for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Come back soon.

Rose of Sharon Bushes are blooming!

I stepped outside today after the rain subsided for a couple of hours. The grass was already dry as I walked around our yard to look at the Rose of Sharon bushes.

Some of the bushes are prolific with blossoms while other bushes haven’t begun blooming. I snapped these photos of all the bushes that are in bloom right now. I promise to share more photos of the other bushes once they begin to share their beauty also.

Here are some other flowers that are doing well – roses and hydrangeas. Deer are beginning to eat my hydrangeas. Sigh! I snapped photos while they were still there. I managed to catch a large bumblebee inside one of the roses.

I hope you enjoyed my photos of all the beauty around. I never tire of admiring the flowers that we have and love to share their gorgeous display with all my readers. May these flowers brighten your day and lift your spirits. They certainly do that for me!

A Lovely Review from Readers’ Favorite Book Awards of The Misunderstood Angel: Branyrd the Angel Book 1!

I was thrilled and humbled to receive this lovely review by a reviewer from Readers’ Favorite Book Awards.

https://readersfavorite.com/book-review/the-misunderstood-angel

Reviewed by Jamie Michele for Readers’ Favorite

In The Misunderstood Angel by J.E. Spina, Branyrd, an Angel aspiring to climb the ranks, faces a series of challenges as she progresses through her celestial training. Initially isolated and delayed in her efforts to meet the LORD for guidance, Branyrd is eventually directed to train with Angels Fourth Class, and her effective supervision and discipline of them lead to her promotion through the angelic levels. Elevated to Angel First Class, Branyrd is assigned a mission on Earth with Guardian Angel Benedicto, who helps her adapt to human life and customs. As she integrates, Branyrd interacts with Maggie and her daughter Annie, offering support and planning a birthday party for Annie. Despite facing obstacles and the potential threat from Maggie’s abusive husband Nate, Branyrd is determined to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

“I heard your plea for help. Are you ready to make amends?” In J.E. Spina’s The Misunderstood Angel, readers are transported to a well-crafted depiction of Heaven, where the hierarchy of angelic classes and earning wings are creatively outlined. The protagonist, Branyrd, has deep-seated feelings of inadequacy and a fervent desire for promotion, reflecting the broader theme of overcoming internal flaws to achieve a higher status. Spina skillfully links the celestial with relatable human experiences, as seen in Branyrd’s attempts to integrate with things like makeup and party planning, bridging the divine and the mundane. Meanwhile, the harrowing events surrounding Nate provide a suspenseful journey toward what may or may not be redemption, showing us the risks of following a dark path but also the mercy of divine intervention—up to a point. Overall, this is an engrossing story and a solid first book in the new Branyrd the Angel series.

I never tire of seeing a review like this. Each review bolsters my confidence and inspires me to write some more. Thank you, Jamie Michele, of Readers’ Favorite for this wonderful review.

If you haven’t read this book, I hope you will check it out soon. If you have read it, I would love to hear what you have to say.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Come back again anytime. You are always welcome!

A fabulous review of Lubelia Alycea by Readers’ Favorite!

I was thrilled and humbled by this fabulous review of my historical novel, Lubelia Alycea by Readers’ Favorite! It is wonderful to see a review like this. It makes me want to continue to write, write and write again! Thank you so much, Romuald Dzemo, Readers’ Favorite reviewer, for your kind words and incredible review! I am sincerely thankful!

Reviewed by Romuald Dzemo for Readers’ Favorite

Lubelia Alycea: One Hundred Years by J.E. Spina spans from the early 20th century to the present. This historical novel is based on the life of the author’s grandmother. It follows a family’s odyssey as they leave their native home in Madeira, where Lubelia, a feisty and determined young girl, struggles to face losing her father to the flu. Along with her twin brother Antonio, she must navigate the challenges of growing up during a time of war and uncertainty. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to a rich and diverse cast of characters, each with their unique struggles and triumphs. We see Lubelia grow into a strong-willed and independent young woman determined to forge her path in life. We also meet Antonio, who is content to follow in his father’s footsteps as a merchant marine but ultimately finds himself caught up in the chaos of World War II.

This well-crafted novel has a finely drawn historical setting that takes readers through the difficult times of two world wars and the Great Depression. Lubelia instantly wins the hearts of readers. She is elaborately explored, from her anxiety about her father’s illness to her escapades with her twin brother to her struggles in a new world; she is depicted as a strong girl who eventually grows up to be a woman who allows nothing to stand between her and her dreams. J.E. Spina writes about family dynamics with intelligence, highlighting the fragile threads that bind them together with themes of love, loss, grief, war, and relationships. The author’s exploration of women’s experiences during times of war is impeccably accomplished. Within this context, the author creates a heroine who refuses to be defined by circumstances. Lubelia Alycea: One Hundred Years is an inspiring and heartwarming family saga filled with humanity, adventure, and heart.

I think my grandmother (Avoa) would have loved this review! She would be proud that I finished the book inspired by her incredible life and dedicated to her memory. Love you and miss you, Avoa!

If you haven’t read this book, I hope you will check it out soon and enjoy it as much as this reviewer. My grandmother and I thank you. Haha!

Thank you for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Please feel free to come back again soon.

Summer heat – flowers are loving it – me not so much!

This summer has brought intense heat in the 90’s for the month of July. We are in a heat wave!! I like the summer but not this much heat! My idea of a perfect summer is days in the 80’s and occasionally a 90-degree day. I guess I would feel differently if I had a pool to cool off.

While I do not enjoy this much heat my flowers are loving it, if we water them often and feed them a little Miracle-Gro. Check out all these photos of flowers on my deck and around the yard.

Above notice the Rose of Sharon blossoms are coming out earlier than usual with all this heat. Three bushes out of a multitude of bushes we have (lost count now) are already blooming. Many more will be starting soon. They are so gorgeous. Of course I will share many photos with you soon.

When we went away for our 15-day cruise we had a neighbor water our plants. Due to the excessive heat he could not keep up with watering them enough and two died with two others hanging in there. These two other plants are coming back – one better than the other one though. I guess we can’t go away too long if there is extreme heat. I noted the one plant that is coming back above with a before and after photo as it is blooming again but without the yellow blossoms. I guess they died off and didn’t come back.

I hope these flowers will brighten your day. They have done that for me just looking at them. Check out my hydrangea bush. This year I finally have many blossoms, though they are quite small. Last year the deer ate all of the blossoms. So far they haven’t touched this one. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I took a closeup making it more impressive, don’t you think? I love these flowers. Unfortunately the deer do too! Haha! I am always taking lots of photos of my flowers in case this happens again just to remember them.

This summer is a perfect time to cuddle up with a good book. I hope you will find a cool place to read and relax. I plan to do just that myself. Happy Reading! Please check out all my books to the right of this post in case you need a new book.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support! Come back again soon!

Summer Reading for your little ones with Jemsbooks – Hop on the Jemsbooks Express!

Have you stocked up your library for your little ones this summer? It’s important to keep young children busy reading and out of trouble. Sometimes they get bored and look for things to do that will cause problems for you. Right?

I remember the days when my two children were little. We visited the library a couple times a week to stock up with books to read to keep them occupied. I didn’t want them to watch too much TV. Back then we didn’t have all the devices or technology that we do today to entice children away from reading. You know which ones I am talking about. Too many young children are also using iPhones now.

Recently when I was in the supermarket I noticed children fussing and parents handing them their cell phones to keep them occupied. I shake my head and sigh when I see this. These children are just too young to be given these phones. Why not hand them a book to look at with colorful illustrations?

That is why I write for children – to engage them, open their minds to creativity, increase their vocabulary, encourage then to love books, and to help them feel better physically, mentally and socially. Parents need to read to experience these same things.

Of course, all my children’s carry important life lessons and good family values. These life lessons are what parents want their children to learn early and often. Don’t you agree? If you have read any of my children’s books you will agree how valuable these lessons are.

I am a lover of reading and have been since I was quite young. Before I could read my mother gave me a coloring book and crayons and I created my own stories with my crayons and my imagination. It helped spark my creativity for which I am thankful today. I did the same with my own children.

Reading is important not only to keep your children’s reading levels up all year long but also it can increase their vocabulary, spark their creativity, enhance their health and wellbeing, and encourage them to become lovers of books. Let’s bring up a generation of readers and thinkers who will become successful and confident adults one day.

Jemsbooks Children’s books are available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Please consider giving books to all the children on your list for all occasions. There is nothing better than to see a child’s eyes light up when you give him/her a book – even more so when you read the book to them. You are giving them so much more than you could ever imagine, e.g., you spark their imagination, heighten their creativity, lift their spirits, increase their vocabulary, open up a whole new world to them, enhance their health and wellbeing and encourage them to love reading. The gift of a book is worth more than gold to our children, grandchildren. Keep reading and gifting books to children. Let’s bring up a generation of readers and thinkers. Thank you for your support!

I hope you will encourage your children to read daily and maybe take some time out of your busy schedule to read too. Read a book together when you find the time. It is more rewarding that way all the way up to middle-graders. I did just that. There come a time when my son said he did not want me to read any more of his books. Sigh! I still read them but didn’t tell him until afterward. We did discuss some of them and he smiled at me and sighed. One day he said, ‘Okay, you can read my books, Mom, just don’t tell anyone that you did, especially my friends!’

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Keep reading and I will keep writing to provide you and your children with entertaining reading. Happy reading everyone! Please remember to review books for all the hard-working authors out there. We will love you for your efforts!
