Books Read and Reviewed in October 2024!

Here it is already the end of another month. Where does the time go? I have been busy as usual reading some wonderful books for the month of October of 2024. Here are the 12 books I read and reviewed for October. I might have read even more if I didn’t have a few WIP. But I always seemed to have a WIP! That fact never stops me! I hope you enjoy reading these reviews.

I love sharing my eclectic reads in this Jemsbooks Segment, Books Read in the Month. I hope you will get a chance to look over these books soon. Thank you for your kind support of my work and that of my fellow authors.

If you are an avid reader, as I am, please review the books you love on Amazon or wherever you purchased them for others to enjoy your reviews. Reviews are one way for readers to know about an exceptional book. We indie authors love to receive reviews and appreciate the efforts of readers to do them. Once again, I thank you for your kind support of me and my books and for supporting my fellow authors too.

When I wrote these reviews I rated them on Amazon, Goodreads and sometimes Barnes & Noble. I did not include the ratings here though. It is best to share my thoughts with you about how I felt about the book without the rating. Ratings can be deceiving at times.

We all feel differently about books. Sometimes we love them, sometimes we like them and still other times we may dislike a book. Some other books are so memorable they take our breaths away! While still others are sweet, sensitive, and enjoyable reads that we soon will forget. But all these books I have reviewed were lovely reads as you can see from my reviews. I hope you enjoy my reviews and that they will help you to decide what will be your next read.

I didn’t remember I had previously read this book in 2014. It had a different cover. Here is my review from 10/6/24.

On Mystic Lake was an emotional and heartfelt read with characters that were flawed and real. The main character, Annie Bourne Colwater, is living in a one-sided marriage. Her selfish and self-absorbed husband doesn’t know how to love her or their daughter. He thinks only of himself.

Annie realizes that she has wasted twenty years with Blake when he announces one day that he is in love with another and wants a divorce. Annie is forced to reevaluate her life and take a break away from him with a visit to her father and her hometown. She hears that her former best friend is in need and she rushes to help him with his young daughter. What she finds is not only a sweet child who is suffering from the loss of her mother but a man in dire need of help when he drowns his sorrow in drink.

I felt my heart breaking for Annie who wants only to be loved and for the little girl, Izzy, who needs her father to love her again. It was tough watching these characters and what they had to go through to find love and peace in their lives.

I didn’t want this story to end and wanted to know more about these memorable characters and what they would do next. I think this should have another book to continue the story. I highly recommend this book from this talented author.

Cut and Thirsty is a short story full of revengeful thoughts and planning in support of a writer who has suffered over the hurtful words and actions of other writers. There is jealousy, envy and hurt feelings.

Heaven, an Unexpected Journey, is an unforgettable and emotional read. The author details his eleven hours in Heaven after he died from an overdose of pain medication. He described the incredible beauty of Heaven and the feeling of love and hope that was all around him. He found it difficult to leave and return to his body and the pain that he suffered until he was healed by God’s hands.

Several descriptions of Heaven left me in tears especially when he described the different buildings that were there. One was for the aborted or lost babies who grow up to join the others in heaven. No one is older than Jesus was when he died. What a feeling it stirred in me when so much of that is going on now with the abortion issue. I always wondered where these poor innocents would go. Now I understand and feel relieved for the babies and for the families who have lost children whether they aborted them or not.

The details of the angels and Jesus were astounding and heart wrenching. The author gave the readers hope that Heaven is everything we prayed it would be and that God is always listening and will never forget us in the toughest times.

A beautiful book with notes from Dr. Thom Gardner and references to passages from the Bible. I highly recommend this book to all, believers or not. It will change your way of thinking and maybe your life. It affected me profoundly and will influence my writing as an author.

The 9th Man is non-stop action thriller that kept me riveted with the main protagonist, Luke Daniels. He was a side kick of Cotton Malone in another series. He does mention Cotton a couple of times in this story and what he learned from him in the past.

Luke is a former Ranger who is fearless and unstoppable when he has something he is determined to solve or put to rights. In this first book he works to put together evidence surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy. He is brought into this case when a woman, he knew from his past, requests his help to solve the murder of her grandfather.

Things become somewhat convoluted when deaths keep piling up around him. He is the middle of something much bigger than he ever imagined and there aren’t many who he can trust to help him escape before he loses his own life.

This was an enjoyable start to this series. I look forward to more adventures for Daniels to come.

Trio is an intriguing short story collection of three stories all with surprise endings.

The Art Class involves a man who models in the nude for an art class of old women. Mark, the model, finds his life implodes in a way that he never imagined.

The Birthday Party focuses on Billy who is given a surprise 90th birthday party but he turns the surprise back on his family when he makes a shocking announcement.

The Journey takes the reader on a journey through the spirit world much to the surprise of a man who couldn’t comprehend such a thing.

This is a quick and interesting read by this talented author. I have read many books by Stevie Turner and enjoyed them all.

A lovely story for Christmas that will put everyone in the spirit of the holiday. The illustrations are beautifully done and are perfect for the story.

I love the way Princess Sophie joins together with the animals of the forest and a wizard to solve the problems that her kingdom has after they lose the spirit of Christmas. Will she be able to bring back the joy of the holiday and keep it going all year long?

Children will enjoy this book with its simplistic message of what is important to the spirit of Christmas.

Tiger Chair is a frightening concept since our world is presently in multiple wars. The author created a story with a view of the conflict through a letter from a Chinese soldier who is in the middle of WWIII with America. This letter displays the angst and horror of war and how pointless and heartbreaking it can be to not only the soldiers but also to the families who have lost loved ones.

This wasn’t my choice of reading material but it was a free book so I opted to read.

Twelve Across is a sweet story about two individuals who are trying to find themselves. Their paths cross when a mutual friend finagles a way to get them together through a deception.

The two main protagonists have each suffered a trauma in the past and must try to put it behind them. When they meet, neither one is ready to share anything about their pasts. When they finally open up a little with one another, they find discover what they really need is not what they expected – a closeness that begins to open up their hearts.

A tender love story that comes full circle as the two characters discover what is important in life and how far you must go to achieve it. Another lovely story by this talented author.

The Gift: Harbor Pointe Series Book 2 is a touching story about a young woman who is ostracized by her parents after she gets pregnant by her teenage boyfriend. This story takes place in 1958 when things were more stringent about these situations.

This young woman, Shelly, is forced to leave home and travel across the country to stay with an aunt. After she takes a wrong turn she finds herself in the woods in the middle of a snowstorm when she goes into labor and delivers a son.

There is nowhere to go but forward as the new mother and baby trudge through the storm to find shelter. A light up ahead gives Shelly hope that maybe she and her son will be saved.

The story is an emotional one involving a little help from beyond that brings the mother and child under the fold of a loving middle-aged couple who have experienced the tragic loss of a child.

A lovely story that touches the heart and restoreths the soul.

Time Points is a quick read about a place called Arcadia that has watchers, fixers, healers and men and women who travel from their world to our world to try to stop unfortunate things happening to people.

Two of the people who live on Arcadia, Vander and Celia, begin to question what they do and if their actions are warranted or have consequences. When Vander’s actions during one of his travels causes unforeseen results, he begins to follow a young teen whose father dies because of his interference. He cannot accept that this girl will now be an orphan. He continues to follow her throughout her life until his superiors stop his progress.

At the same time, Celia, is questioning the similar things in her position as a fixer. The two team up together and discover that they have the same doubts and want to leave Arcadia and build a life elsewhere. Will they be allowed to do this or are they putting themselves in danger?

An Unsuitable Job for a Woman is a mystery with an odd collections of characters including the main protagonist, Cordelia Gray, who is a different kind of private investigator. She is young and inexperienced but capable of solving a mystery though in her own unique way.

She is thrust into a new cast after discovering that her partner in the agency committed suicide after that he is diagnosed with cancer. After getting over the shock of seeing his body sloped over his desk Cordelia tries to get the business back on track when she is asked to take a case from a rich and prominent man whose son has committed suicide. He requests that Cordelia find out why his son took his life.

This book was written in an old English writing style with words and descriptions that were out of the past which caused it to drag at times. I have another book in this two-part collection to read. I hope it will be better.

The Skull Beneath the Skin is the second book in this series with the private eye, Cordelia Gray. She is hired to watch over an actress whose life has been threatened in several letters from an unknown person or persons.

Cordelia finds herself embroiled in multiple mysteries involving several people who are on an island to attend the play featuring the subject of her present job. There are many suspects who all appear to have a grudge against this woman.

I found this a long, drawn out story that was tedious at times to complete. I don’t particularly enjoy James’ writing style or the use of many words that are no longer in use in today’s books.

Aruba – One Happy Island!

Vacation is going well – resting, reading, swimming, relaxing, walking, eating and sleeping on the beach when I can. Life is good! I will be well rested after this and probably gained a couple of pounds if I don’t walk it off. Doing 8-10K steps a day. Hopefully I will burn some of the much-needed pounds off!

We have some special people we met many years ago here that we see every year with whom we spend time catching up. They have become good friends of ours. We only wish we could see them more often and just once a year in Aruba.

As promised, here are some more photos of this lovely island and some food too. Views from our room in the tower, eating out at breakfast, dinner and a few shots of the ocean, coconut shrimp and the restaurant Old Cunucu House. This was really a quaint old Aruban house with small rooms that was converted into a restaurant. There was a comical waiter that kept us laughing all night. He was quite a character. His name was Arturo.

There are many iguanas here that roam around the pool area and other grounds. I hope I can snap a pic of them to share with you. We are moving to the pool area rooms. These lizards are quite unusual and come in different colors of turquoise, green and brown.. Stay tuned for more.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Come back again soon!

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

One Happy Island – Aruba! Happy Halloween!

Well, it is that time of year when we travel to our favorite vacation spot – Aruba. Bon Bini – welcome from Aruba! It is a beautiful little island, sunny, warm weather, balmy breezes, sparkling, crystal water and white sandy beaches. What more can you ask for? There are also many wonderful restaurants to eat all kinds of tasty meals and plenty of fresh fish of the day!

Here are some photos to share of our first couple of days here. I won’t be posting every day but a few more times for your enjoyment. I hope you like my photos and that they put you in the mood for some island living.

We are always here on this sunny island for Halloween! I will snap more of the decorations when I see them and send along. There are many areas that are in construction making it difficult to photograph these signs of Halloween with many obstacles in the way. I will do my best though. I did snap one below of a zombie.

I brought my Canadian friend, author Mike Martin’s book to Aruba so I could take a selfie for him with it. I hope he sees this. I plan to send him a few of them of course if he doesn’t see it.

I promise to send along plenty more pics of this lovely island. It is so relaxing each day sitting under our palapa (umbrella) and reading or sleeping. We spend plenty of time in the water which is warm but refreshing. Unfortunately, I suffered from a terrible sunburn the first day and have had to wear a shirt the next day and probably for a couple more days. I used a 70 spray but found out too late that sprays are not effective with this blazing sun. Sigh! I visited the Aloe store in our complex and stocked up with a few things to try to heal my poor sore and red skin. I don’t usually burn like this. I think it may have something to do with a medication I am taking as per a friend here who is a nurse. She is a wealthy of information.

Well, I got to get to sleep now. I have to get up early here. No sleeping in or I would miss out on the lovely beach time.

Stay tune for more photos and food to make you envious that you are not here too. I wish you could be. It is memorable!

Thank you for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. I promise to get back to work on my book when I return home. Watch for it in time for the holidays!

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

One last look at fall’s beauty!

At this time I am not in New England to enjoy the beauty of fall so I had to do this post ahead of time to share my last photos with you.

These are of a golf course near our home that always offers fantastic views in any season.

These are of my neighborhood.

More of my neighborhood and backyard.

I never tire of gazing at this beauty from God above. I always feel blessed to be alive during this time of year, my favorite!

I will be in Aruba when you see this post. There is no fall on the island but there is plenty of beauty all around that I will enjoy.

Once I leave here and return home all the beauty I shared above will be gone. Sad but true, reason why I snap so many photos so I can look back at and enjoy,

Thank you for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. I hope you enjoyed my photos and will come back again soon for more. Watch for my first post from Aruba – the Happy Island!

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

Taking a little time off!

While I wait for my beta readers to review my latest WIP I will be taking a few weeks off to recharge. I will return to publish Branyrd the Angel Book 4 and pick up where I left off with Gateskin Chronicles Book 4.

I may blog from time to time and keep up with emails but I will be taking a break from writing until I return from my vacation. Each year my husband and I travel to Aruba for a yearly break. Last year was only the second time in 25 years that we could not go. One year was because of Covid in 2020 and in 2023 I was too sick to travel. We will make up for all the good times we missed those two years.

Here are a couple of pics of Aruba from our past vacations. I promise to post some new ones over the three weeks we are there. It’s one happy island!

Each year we have spent time with friends we have made while vacationing there. It’s like visiting family every time. The Aruban people there welcome us by saying ‘Bon Bini and Welcome Home.’ It does feel like home to us after so many years. We know our way around the island and are familiar with many of the restaurants even though each year there are more added that we will try.

If you haven’t been to Aruba then you don’t know what you are missing – the beautiful island, the gorgeous turquoise blue water, warm breezes, delicious food, lovely and friendly people and the safe environment. Let the fun begin!

While I rest and soak up the sun, sand and sea, please check out all my books until I return and provide some new ones for you. Check out all my previous posts until I can post some new ones! I will be busy some days on the beach, reading, relaxing and enjoying the marvelous weather and soaking up some sun.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Feel free to come back again soon.

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

Time to take a break!

I have been so busy with two WIP along with everything else life throws at you that I think it is time to take another break. My last break was back in June of this year. I will still do some blogging during my break and check on emails from time to time but most likely no work on books in the wings.

We all need to take a break away from the intense work (though I love it) of writing and creating a new story for our readers. It does take a lot out of writers and sometimes depletes us. Thus, my reason to take this much-needed break. Ahh!

When I return to work once again I will publish my latest book and finish up the second WIP, a children’s book, then on to the next book in the Gateskin Chronicles series. That is an epic series that takes 3-4 months or more to complete. There are three books to be completed at this time in this series which I don’t expect to complete until 2025 or 2026. I hope you will be patient and wait for them but read all the others in the meantime. I promise there will be more excitement, creatures, magic and good against evil once again in the next three books.

Please check out all my books, 46 at present, until I return.

Thank you for your kind support as always!

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

Gold Medals now on Gateskin Chronicles Books 1-3!

My husband added Gold Medals from Mom’s Choice Awards on the Gateskin Chronicles Series Books 1-3. I will be publishing these books with their new awards on Amazon soon. I’m still celebrating these awards! I am so thankful for this prestigious honor. Thank you, Mom’s Choice Awards! @MomsChoiceAwards.com.

MOM’S CHOICE AWARDS WINNER – GOLD MEDAL!

This is Book 1 of a fantasy series that will have six books in all. In this book learn about the three children of King Gateskin and his wife, Queen Solinara. The children have had powers since they were quite young..

Serena was three years old when she learned of her power to move objects with her mind. Her brother, Simon, can fly and their sister, Catalina, can become invisible or blend into her surroundings. They live with their parents in Sovorotskina, the Land of Light.

With these powers comes responsibility. The children must try to use their powers for the common good and responsibly to help others. The three children befriend a Sprite named Spindle who accompanies them on their adventure. Along the way they meet up with their aunt and uncle, their mother’s brother and his wife, Wizard Hotenfaran and Fairy Procelina. The group must travel into the evil land of Parotovina, Land of Darkness, to save King Gateskin, who was kidnapped, and also rescue some of the descendants of their friends and fellow Sovorotskinans who were captured and taken by the Evil Ones. These descendants have been waiting a long time to be free to return to the villages of their ancestors.

The children have many trials and adventures along the way. Will they be able to rescue their father and fellow Sovorotskinans without endangering their own lives? Will the evil King Kaposkaran and his Queen Beregina stop Serena and her siblings from being successful or will they turn Serena and her siblings to their dark ways?

I am working on Book 4 now and hope to publish in March or April of 2025. The whole series is an epic production with multiple characters, magic, fantastic creatures, good over evil, and more.

Grab your copies of the first three books in this series in the meantime while you wait for the next one.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support of my books and blog. Feel free to come back again soon.

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

Gateskin 4 is coming along and so is Branyrd the Angel Book 4!

I have been working on Gateskin Chronicles Book 4 while I wait for Branyrd the Angel Series Book 4 to come back from my beta readers. I have completed four chapters already. The story is flowing out of me and I have no idea what is going to happen next or how it will end. That is what is so exciting about being a pantser. I am along for the ride and what a ride it can be!

In the meantime please check out all the other books in these two series. I hope to publish Branyrd’s book in November. Watch for it! Gateskin’s book will not be published until 2025 hopefully in March. Fingers crossed.

This is not a children’s book. Branyrd is a different kind of angel. She has a difficult time being understood because of her habit of getting into all kinds of trouble and for her unacceptable language. Angels are not supposed to swear.

This angel must earn levels to be accepted by the LORD. She is presently at Angel Fourth Class and must ascend to Angel First Class in order to be given a mission to travel to Earth to help a human in trouble.

Once she reaches Angel First Class, she is given a mission and travels to Earth to help a battered woman and her child. Since she is so new to the ways on Earth, Branyrd is accompanied by her Guardian Angel Benedicto, Angel First Class on High, who guides and advises her.

Branyrd doesn’t know what she will do or how she will complete this mission. She must show her strengths and succeed, or she may be demoted. What she finds on Earth is not what she expected. It certainly is nothing like Heaven. There are dangerous people but also those who she will miss dearly when she must leave.

Here is the new cover of Branyrd the Angel Book 4 created by my husband, John. Branyrd is excited to complete this newest mission and share it with you.

Here is the the link to Gateskin. I will be putting on the MCA seal soon! Winner of Mom’s Choice Awards Gold Medal!

I hope you enjoy these two series as much as I did writing them. There are three more in the Gateskin series coming over the next two years.

Branyrd’s series is ending with this last one unless she decides to share another story with me and wants to go on another mission for the LORD.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Please be kind and review books for all the hard-working authors out there. We thank you for your efforts to help us spread word about our books.

Fall color keeps on coming!

I snapped some recent photos of the color in our backyard that I wanted to share with you. It really has brightened up the whole area with the yellows, oranges and reds. Just beautiful! I never tire of gazing out my kitchen windows at all this beauty. The sky was spectacularly clear this day too!

A day like this makes me feel blessed to be alive and able to enjoy this incredible scene. I hope you enjoy these photos too. We have to enjoy it for as long as we can since it is so fleeting.

As I mentioned in a previous post, we brought in our hibiscus plant and I stopped my husband from scalping it since it was covered with buds that were begging to blossom. I am so happy that I did because I have been enjoying all the flowers that keep on coming.

There are many more still ready to come out. I look forward to seeing each one. If my husband had trimmed it I wouldn’t be enjoying it so much now. I did mention that fact to him. Haha! I won’t let him trim it until all the flowers are gone. I have to keep a close eye on him and his trimmer in case he tries to attack the poor plant.

I hope my photos cheered you up today if you were feeling down. Fall always does that for me after my flowers are all gone. There is always something to look forward to.
