Please consider giving books to all the children on your list for all occasions. There is nothing better than to see a child’s eyes light up when you give him/her a book – even more so when you read the book to them. You are giving them so much more than you could ever imagine, e.g., you spark their imagination, heighten their creativity, lift their spirits, increase their vocabulary, open up a whole new world to them, enhance their health and wellbeing and encourage them to love reading. The gift of a book is worth more than gold to our children, grandchildren. Keep reading and gifting books to children. Let’s bring up a generation of readers and thinkers. Thank you for your support!
I feel pure joy writing for children and hope with God’s help and blessing to continue to write many more fun adventures for children to read and enjoy. I do enjoy writing for MG/PT/YA and 18+ too!
Thank you for stopping by to read this post. Come back again any time. Thank you for your kind support and for any reviews you may post wherever you purchased my books.

What is imagination? If you look this word up in the dictionary it says:
IMAGINATION: the faculty of imaging, or of forming mental images or concepts of what is not actually present to the senses.
The action or process of forming such images or concepts.
The faculty of producing ideal creations consistent with reality, as in literature, is distinct from the power of creating illustrative or decorative imagery.
The faculty of producing ideal creations consistent with reality, as in literature, as distinct from the power of creating illustrative or decorative imagery.
The product of imagining a conception or mental creation, often a baseless or fanciful one.
Albert Einstein famously said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” Through imagination, people can explore ideas of things that are not physically present, ranging from the familiar (e.g., a thick slice of chocolate cake) to the never-before-experienced (e.g., an alien spacecraft appearing in the sky).
Are we allowing our children to use their imagination enough? Or are their heads in online media, games or TV?
Compliments of free online photos
There are a lot of information online about the harm or effects of our children, grandchildren using too much. Check out this link below that shares more about this with parents.
It can be so frightening to think that our children can become addicted to these games. Addiction involves many things not just drugs or alcohol. What can we do to protect our children? I don’t have the magic solution to this current issue in our world today. All I can suggest is to limit children’s time using these games and substituting books or games that you can play without going online. There are so many fun games that kids can be playing such as Monopoly, word games, etc. See link below showing many options for games for the brain.
These games are helpful to adults too for their aging brains. We all need to keep our brains working and thinking so they do not get stagnant and allowing our imagination and creativity to dry up.
I love jigsaw puzzles. I recently purchase one that my husband and I will work on after I complete my latest children’s book. Working on books, blogging, emails and promoting keeps my brain active and sparking with creativity and imagination that goes wild with ideas to create new books.
What are you doing to keep your brain active and healthy? Learning a new skill is one way to do that, e.g. a new language, sewing, crocheting, knitting, painting or other crafts. If you do this your children will be inspired to do something like this too. Let’s keep our children’s brain working at peak capacity so that they can learn and grow healthy in mind and body.

In order to reach our children before they begin playing these online games we must introduce them to books, games, puzzle – jigsaw, word search, suduko, solitaire, crossword puzzles, and many other books early in their lives.
When my children were young we played checkers, jigsaw puzzles, read tons of books, played with weebles, trucks, dolls and played make believe by acting out a story. I did the same with my grandchildren when I babysat. After a while they automatically pulled out the games and books when I went over. It was always so much fun and caused plenty of chuckles when I would lose a game, sometimes by accident and other times on purpose. I always included lessons in alphabet games I made up and number games too. I wanted my kids and grandkids to have a headstart when they began school by knowing their alphabet and numbers. I did a lot of singing too to make the letters and numbers easier to remember. My grandson especially liked when I sang Disney tunes, like the song from the Little Mermaid. I love that song too. I also did imitations of Grover, Cookie Monster and The Count from Sesame Street. I miss having a llittle one to teach since my grandchildren are all grown up. I guess I will just have to keep providing books for children to learn fun things about animals.
Watch for my latest children’s book coming in the next month, fingers crossed. Please check out all my books below to help keep your children’s imagination sparking.
Reading is important not only to keep your children’s reading levels up all year long but also it can increase their vocabulary, spark their creativity, enhance their health and wellbeing, and encourage them to become lovers of books. Let’s bring up a generation of readers and thinkers who will become successful and confident adults one day.
Let’s encourage our children to get away from the games and get into books and other fun projects that will increase their imagination, creativity and get their brains charged. It’s never too late!
Thank you so much for stopping by read this post and for your continued support. Please keep your children reading to save the from the dangers of online games.

In Mission of Love, author Janice Spina continues the epic adventures of Branyrd the angel. This time she has one of her hardest missions ever. Luckily, she is joined by her own guardian angel, Benedicto, who provides sage advice and counsel to our intrepid angel. Can Branyrd save the children while their island home is under attack? There is kindness and wisdom and humor and everything that one would like in a story about a courageous angel on a Mission of Love.
Branyrd is on another mission which may be the toughest one so far. She has been sent to a troubled island in the South Pacific that is being attacked by the fellow islands in the archipelago. Her mission is to rescue some children from an orphanage during the attacks.
She is escorted, once again, by her Guardian Angel, Benedicto, who is there as counsel and aide as she completes her mission. What Branyrd finds there is devastation and heartbreak as she tackles the mission, this time one of love for the children and the rest of the islanders who have lost family and homes.
There are many obstacles that stand in her way and danger for the children and others as she must rescue not only them, but also another island that is in danger of sinking.

I hope you will check out this series soon to see how Branyrd handles each mission and supplies love, mercy and hope to all who were in need. Her Guardian Angel, Benedicto, provides a little humor in the toughest of times to give a little levity to the situations that they must face. I guarantee you will fall in love with Branyrd and Benedicto.

Do you love before and after photos? I do. I love shows that have before and after scenes like in home network shows. But these are too difficult to look at. Check them out!
I had to share these shocking photos of my hibiscus plant that my husband finally pruned or should I say attacked! Look at these photos and you will see what I mean. That is why I did not let him near my plant until it had stopped flowering. Sigh!
The first three photos are of how the plant looked when it was outside.
How it looked inside while still flowering
Pruned in 2023Pruned in 2024
The above photos are how he pruned this same plant in two years. I think he loves to torture this poor plant from year to year. It has lived for 18 years now despite all the pruning he has done. It’s amazing that it is so resilient! I would never let him cut my hair!!
The pruning in 2023 shows that it began to grow quickly and fill out. The second photo is still newly trimmed so that it hasn’t begun to fill out yet. I hope it does. Poor baby!
John has been known to prune plants even shorter. I was not around at the time he attacked this plant so I couldn’t save it in time. I think it will come back or at least I hope so! Fingers crossed. It is a beautiful plant as you can see above when it is outside and flowering! When it is inside the flowers are a paler color of salmon than when it is outside. I guess the sun helps to brighten the color.
Outside flowerInside flower
Well, I guess I better watch John more closely when he prunes (attacks) my plant. Sigh!
Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Come back again real soon. You are always welcome!

JEMSBOOKS.COM – Author – Janice Spina aka J.E. SpinaIllustrations & Covers by John Spina
This newsletter is a way to let you know what is new to JemsBooks each year.
It was a busy and productive year with plenty of writing, reading, reviewing, and blogging.
Each month I read between 5-10 books and review them on my blog to help spread word of fellow authors’ books. This is one way to do that. I hope you will also review books to help authors. Please check out these reviews on my blog/website – Jemsbooks.com/Jemsbooks. Blog.
Each year I give myself a goal to reach. In 2024 I hoped to publish 3-4 books along with everything else that I had to do. I also copyedited other authors’ books during the year. I did meet my goal of publishing three books this year.
Here is what transpired.
In January my novel, Hunting Mariah, received an award from Maincrest Media Awards for thriller/mystery.
In February my children’s book, Drystan the Dragon and Friends Book 3: Delbert Finds Himself, won a Silver Medal from Mom’s Choice Awards.
Also, in February my children’s book, Drystan the Dragon and Friends Book 6: Dragana Helps a Fairy, won a Silver Medal from Mom’s Choice Awards.
In May I published Book3 of Gateskin Chronicles: Search for the Medallion – a fantasy/adventures series that will have six books in all. More books coming in 2025 and beyond.
In September The Legend of the Taken Ones: Gateskin Chronicles Book 1, The Unknown Territory: Gateskin Chronicles Book 2, and Search for the Medallion: Gateskin Chronicles Book 3 all received GOLD MEDALS from MOM’S CHOICE AWARDS!
In November I published Book 4 of Branyrd the Angel Series –Mission of Hope, a fantasy/spiritual/uplifting series about an Angel and her missions to help needy people on Earth.
A children’s book is in the works that my husband is illustrating. Watch for it in 2025.
I have a couple more series in the wings, one for YA and the other for 18+. There is always something brewing at Jemsbooks.
Thank you so much for your support. Keep reading and I will keep writing!

I woke up this morning and saw a winter wonderland outside my window. It was beautiful. Everything was sparkling and covered in white even the trees. I had to take many photos to share with you so that you could see how incredible everything looked.
Later the sky was so blue that the snow looked even more beautiful and pristine. Tomorrow I will check to see how much traffic we receive overnight with all the footprints of the woodland visitors.
More snow is coming our way along with the deep cold temps once again. I will probably snap some more photos to share soon. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

This is a post I wrote in the past that I would like to share with you again for its importance to all parents about reading and the development of your children’s brains.
How important is reading to children’s brain development? I recently read an article by two doctors, Dr. Mehmet Oz & Dr. Michal Roizen, in my local newspaper that stated that ‘Reading is brain food for kids.’ Google this interesting article by these two prominent doctors.
John reading to his grandchildren when they were younger.
In my opinion reading to young children has proven to be beneficial not only in helping them read by the time they start school but also in helping them with their speech and language skills. Reading to your children from birth on will provide a valuable bonding experience for both of you. You will find that your children will want to spend time with you and will share more of themselves with you later on.
Here I am below reading to children at our local library, Leach Library.
My youngest grandson who is now 11.
Once your children learn to read let them read to you. It will give them confidence and help them learn pronunciations of words and inflection of the storyline. It is also fun to create stories between you and act them out. This promotes creativity in your child and will be entertaining to both of you. Oh, I know, that is asking too much to act out a story! We authors just love reading out loud and acting out the storyline. Lol! Sorry! But all you have to do is read – that is important. Leave the acting to the children. They will love it!
Three of my five grandchildren who are now grown and in their teens and above.
We must all remember that our children and grandchildren will grow up much too fast for our liking. Spend as much time as you can with them as they develop in mind and body. A parent’s job is a difficult one and takes time and effort but is most rewarding in the long run if we just take the time to read and listen to our children and grandchildren.
Most of all have fun reading to and with your children. They will love you for it!
I feel pure joy writing for children and hope with God’s help and blessing to continue to write many more fun adventures for children to read and enjoy. I do enjoy writing for MG/PT/YA and 18+ too!

It is always a sincere pleasure to welcome a fellow author to Interview an Author on Jemsbooks.blog. Today, please help me welcome talented author/illustrator, Mark C. Collins. I have known Mark for many years and am in awe of his talent as not only an author but also as an illustrator. I was happy when he accepted my invitation to be interviewed and showcase his work here.
Hi Mark, you answered so many of my questions that it was difficult to chose just eight. Your answers were equally entertaining. I had to choose more to share. The floor is yours, Mark.
Mark C. Collins
Please tell us something about yourself.
I not only write, but I make a living as an illustrator with a humorous style. On the side I paint pictures, mostly landscapes from my head. I’m also a singer/songwriter/bassist in an all-originals rock duo, and have recorded several songs planned for an EP.
Jjspina: You are truly multi-talented, Mark. I had no idea that you could sing too!
When did you know that you wanted to be an author?
In 2013 I was commissioned by a children’s book author to illustrate her 4-book series. Once completed, I realized I could make my own books as well. I have always written poetry and short stories, so it wasn’t much of a jump writing for children. My first book, “Grandma Stinks,” was released on Dec 2013.
Jjspina: If I ever need an illustrator, I may look you up. I think we could be seeing more books involving your poetry and short stories next.
What process do you need in order to write?
No specific process, but most of my creative ideas come to me while in the shower. An idea… a title, scenario, or full synopsis would come into mind, and I’d have to wait until after my shower to rush into my studio to jot it down. Most of my ideas are rhyming, so it’s a race against the clock when composing a passage in my head while showering, then trying to get out of there in time to write it down before I forget! LOL
Jjspina:That is too funny, Mark. I get a lot of ideas in my shower too so I know what you mean. It is difficult at times to remember the rhyming to write it down.
How do you come up with ideas for your stories?
As aforementioned, most of the time the ideas come in the shower. I think the sound of the water and the solitude are conducive for creative sparks.
Jjspina: I think water is conducive to relaxation and thus opening up your creativity.
What projects are you currently working on?
Creating a series of coloring books. I currently have four on the market and am working on a fifth.
Jjspina: I have seen them online and am quite impressed. They are beautiful!
What do you expect to accomplish in 2025 and beyond?
I don’t usually try to get ahead of myself, and instead live day to day, in the moment. But a loose plan would be to finish a few more coloring books, another storybook, and get more public interest in my painting career.
Jjspina: I should do that too – not get ahead of myself. I’m sure you will exceed all these expectations with all your talents.
What hobbies do you have when you are not writing?
As mentioned, painting, and writing/recording rock songs with my duo.
Jjspina:Sounds like you are very busy.
What is your target audience for your book?
Kids between the ages of 3 and 10. But I love it when adults enjoy my books as well.
Jjspina: I am sure kids love your books. They are so beautifully illustrated and comical. I’ve read some of them and loved them as an adult.
What advice would you give prospective authors?
Keep going. Don’t get discouraged. We all find our voice and style through constant work… and failures. We live in a time when self-publishing platforms can create opportunities to express whatever drives us. When writing for children, do not preach. Kids know when they’re being patronized. Instead, educate through entertaining text and pictures. Find an angle, a twist, or create an adversity the protagonist has to overcome. Kids relate to that, and it instills confidence.
Jjspina: What excellent advice, Mark.
Do you have any unusual talents? What are they?
I was a ventriloquist as a child. And I can still “throw my voice.”
Jjspina: Amazing! Is there anything you cannot do?
Is there anything else you would like to share?
So many children’s authors spend countless hours writing, revising, rewriting, until their manuscript is perfect, then they seek out cheap illustrators with poor skills to illustrate their book. Why? Their work is important to them, so it’s equally important to spend the money on a good illustrator… preferably with a graphic design background, which is so important for the overall layout and flow of the story.
Jjspina: Good advise for all children’s books authors.
Speak for one of your characters in your books for this interview.
I’ll speak for Emma, the little girl in my first book, “Grandma Stinks.” I chose a girl because I, as a man, liked the idea of a girl confronting her grandmother’s scent. A boy, especially at that age would have been too obvious with his derision. Emma approached the issue sensitively when dealing directly with Grandma yet only expressed to the reader and her parents how disgusted she was with it all. She confided in the reader her true feelings.
Jjspina: That book was adorable, clevely written and beautifully illustratedas all Mark’s entertaining books.
I read Mark’s book below, Meet the Bugz! Here is my review.
Come meet 18 of the most common bugs, in cute cartoon style. Learn simple facts and have a few laughs! Ages 3 – 8.
This is a fun and educational way to learn about bugs. The illustrations are just beautiful and the rhyming is well written. Children will enjoy looking at the cute and colorful illustrations of each bug and learning some interesting things about each insect.
This is the first book I have read by this multi-talented author/illustrator. I was provided with a copy of this book for an honest review. I would highly recommend this delightful book. This reader enjoyed it immensely.
Thank you so much, Mark, for stopping by to share a little about yourself and your books. It was a sheer pleasure to have you here. Please feel free to come back again when you have a new book to share with me and my readers.
Thank you, readers, for stopping by to read about this talented author/illustrator. I hope you will check out his books and follow him on his links. Happy reading everyone!
I have received so many requests to showcase other authors’ books that I cannot take on anymore. Anyone I already promised to interview, of course, I will complete. I wish all these authors I had to refuse much success with their work. Thank you for your interest in my blog.
Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!
READING GIVES YOU WINGS TO FLY! SOAR WITH JEMSBOOKS ALL YEAR THROUGH! HAPPY READING!
Here it is already the end of another month. Where does the time go? I have been busy as usual reading some wonderful books for the month of January of 2025. Here are the 7 books I read and reviewed forJanuary. I might have read even more if I didn’t have a few WIP. But I always seemed to have a WIP! That fact never stops me! I hope you enjoy reading these reviews.
I love sharing my eclectic reads in this Jemsbooks Segment, Books Read in the Month. I hope you will get a chance to look over these books soon. Thank you for your kind support of my work and that of my fellow authors.
If you are an avid reader, as I am, please review the books you love on Amazon or wherever you purchased them for others to enjoy your reviews. Reviews are one way for readers to know about an exceptional book. We indie authors love to receive reviews and appreciate the efforts of readers to do them. Once again, I thank you for your kind support of me and my books and for supporting my fellow authors too.
When I wrote these reviews I rated them on Amazon, Goodreads and sometimes Barnes & Noble. I did not include the ratings here though. It is best to share my thoughts with you about how I felt about the book without the rating. Ratings can be deceiving at times.
We all feel differently about books. Sometimes we love them, sometimes we like them and still other times we may dislike a book. Some other books are so memorable they take our breaths away! While still others are sweet, sensitive, and enjoyable reads that we soon will forget. But all these books I have reviewed were lovely reads as you can see from my reviews. I hope you enjoy my reviews and that they will help you to decide what will be your next read.
Searching for Summer is an emotional read that tugs at one’s heart when a young teen leaves home and breaks her mother’s heart. The main protagonist, Mirabelle, can’t understand why her daughter left home without a word. She is tormented daily and spends all the time searching for any sign of her daughter, Summer. She forfeits her job and her love to try and find her.
During this time Summer is doing whatever she wants unaware of how hard her mother is searching for her and how much she is suffering. Will Mirabelle ever find her daughter and get on with her own life? Will Summer come back on her own terms?
This story takes the reader through all of Mirabelle’s daily searches and details her emotions so deeply that the reader can feel her pain. It is heartbreaking to see her as she sacrifices everything for the love of her daughter.
An emotional read that is hard to put down.
A Calamity of Souls is a moving story of the life and times of racial bias in Freeman County, Virginia. There were still areas that did not offer equal rights to the blacks and this place was as unforgiving as they come.
Two lawyers take on a case involving a black couple who are wrongfully-accused of the murder of a white couple the man worked for. There are many things that come forward that would cause the jury to think that the couple were guilty. With a scrupulous prosecutor and a biased judge it looks like the black couple do not stand a chance.
The author, incomparable David Baldacci, creates this outstanding story about racial inequality that tears at the heartstrings of the reader as the injustices keep mounting along with the unfair practices of the justice system that keeps throwing another wrench into the works for the lawyers.
An enjoyable and deeply moving shocking story about racial inequality.
Night Road is an unforgettable tale of emotions, heart wrenching loss, incomprehensible sacrifice and the unfortunate breakdown of a family in turmoil who cannot feel love after a horrific accident takes the life of a young woman.
The loss of this one woman brought about heartache to all who were in the accident leaving them bereft and guilty for being unable to undue what was done. The three teens, twins Mia and Zach, and their friend Lexie, who was driving home from a party after drinking too much, crashed into a tree only a mile from the twins’ home. The twins made a crucial mistake by not calling their mother to pick them up. This mistake would change their lives forever and keep them from being a family as they once were.
This was an emotional read that left me in tears as I felt the heartache the characters were feeling. The author created an emotional story that captured the heart of this reader and kept me captivated until the satisfying ending. It was difficult to put down and I read into the night.
I absolutely love this story and highly recommend it to all! Kristin Hannah created another wonderful story rich with highly defined characters and an engrossing and emotional story line.
The Innocent Angels is a DI Lexie Bennett crime fiction where Lexie is working on a new case of the murders of two women. With her trusty fellow officers they are using all their skills to find this killer before there is another body.
A gripping, engrossing mystery with surprises and many suspects as the tension builds and so does the danger toward Lexie who is exhausted and at her wits end to solve this mystery. A story that I couldn’t put down.
I love this character and how dedicated she is at doing her job and never giving up even when her life is in danger.
An enjoyable series that I will continue to follow.
Amanda in Arabia is a creative story based in UAE with the main protagonist, Amanda, on a visit with her aunt and uncle. Amanda is adventuresome, curious and resilient. She meets another teen her age, Leah, and they become BFFs.
Amanda and Leah ride on some camels and end up in a whorlwhind of an adventure involving a princess and those who want to kidnap her and return her to her father to marry a much older man and then collect a reward for doing this.
A quick story and a mystery adventure that is an enjoyable read. I look forward to more adventures with Amanda.
Deeper Than the Dead is book one of the Vera Boyett crime series. This story was gripping and surprising in all its details with intriguing twists and turns. Nothing is as it seems when more and more problems come to light for Vera in this captivating start to this series.
Vera Boyett, a crime analyst, who is a disgraced deputy police chief, returns home and finds life is not the same for her two sisters with their father now in an Alzheimer’s facility. Vera soon learns of a body being found in a cave that is on their land. When other bodies are found there, the local police chief gets involved and turns out to be her former boyfriend. Too many suspects, secrets and lies leads to an intriguing story line.
With a captivating story, well defined characters, and unexpected happenings, this was an enjoyable read. I look forward to the next book in this crime series.
Bad Moon was a shocking and horrifying tale of a family Involving murder, incest, and torture. It was a difficult story to read and I almost stopped several times as I read the terrifying details of each scene. The author describes things that become immediately visible to the reader in a horrific way.
It shook me up in many ways as the horror continued throughout the book. I was relieved to finish it. I was given a copy of this book by the author and did an honest review.
Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. I review books so that other readers will be able to pick and choose what their next read will be. I don’t recommend every book I read however. I hope you will find something of interest in this month’s collection of books. Please don’t forget JemsBooks in your reading choices. Haha!
We all have different tastes in reading material. If someone gifts me a book I do my best to read and review even if I find that book difficult to read. I will always support fellow authors in any way I can but there are some genres I choose not to read such as zombies, horror, extreme violence and suggestive material.

There are so many books on Amazon that it boggles the mind. I love to read and have an eclectic taste in reading as well as in my writing. I have favorites like everyone else. Mine are mysteries, suspense, historical fiction, serial crime, paranormal mysteries and inspirational stories. What are your favorites?
I write in many of these genres and age groups but would love to hear if there are many you would like to see me write. I love to keep jumping around to different genres to keep my writing fresh and my creativity sparking.
At present I am working on a children’s book and book 4 of my fantasy series. I jump between them from time to time when an idea pops into my head for one of the other books.
JemsBooks has received multiple book awards for all genres.

Do you know how important reviews are for authors? If you don’t, let me explain. Amazon does not recognize our books unless we have over 25 reviews. After we reach that amount they may or may not promote our work. Until we reach that goal, we are drowning in the level of books that keeps growing.
If you want to show some love for authors who are working hard to make it in this myriad book market, please review our books and keep us relevant. When you review books you encourage and motivate us to keep writing for your enjoyment. Thank you so much.
Thank you for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support of me and my fellow authors. You are welcome to visit anytime.
