5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Addition to Your Family’s Library

Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2025

Family and Friends: Tales for Children by Janice Spina is a collection of heartfelt stories that parents and children will want to read over and over again. With beautiful illustrations and lovely poetry it conjures up images of family and fun and growing up perfectly. There are also important messages about love and kindness that children of all ages need to hear. This book would be a great addition to your family’s library

It’s always nice to see a new review. I hope if you haven’t checked out this book yet, that you will soon for your children to enjoy. There are stories about animals, family and friends, and a bully.

The cover was created by my husband, John, who also did all the illustrations for each story. All stories are stand-alone. One story about a mouse carries a continuing cadence that will have children laughing as they repeat it along with the reader. I laughed as I created the story.

I enjoy adding some levity to my stories for all ages to enjoy. We all need to laugh a little every day. I hope you and your children will enjoy these stories and laugh and have a good time reading them over and over again.

Please check out all my children’s book in rhyme with important life lessons and good family values. It is never too soon for children to learn them.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. You are welcome to come back again any time.

A new review of Family and Friends: Tales for Children:

I am thrilled to share this review with you of my newest children’s book: Family and Friends: Tales for Children.

This is a children’s book with six stories for ages 5-8. Each story is a stand-alone story. Children will read about two little sisters, two young boys, a boy and a toad, rabbits, a bluebird, and a mouse and a piece of cheese.

They are feel-good stories that children will want to read again and again. One story will make children laugh out loud while others will teach them important life lessons about kindness to others, friends and family matter, believe in yourself, and you can do anything if you just try.

5 Stars For ‘FAMILY AND FRIENDS: Tales For Children’ by Janice Spina

Award Winning Author Janice Spina shares the importance of family and friends for children of all ages.

What impressed me was her dedication to the two little girls that she met, who love to read, so she promised to write them a new book about friends. She dedicates all her ‘Jembooks’ to children who love to read and the parents/grandparents who take the time to enjoy books with the children in their lives.

Beautiful Book Cover Design and one illustration at the beginning of each Chapter by John Spina (Illustrator). I encourage you to purchase this book and all the ‘Jembooks’ for your children, grandchildren, classrooms, libraries and all the places where children and parents gather.

I quote a snippet about each chapter:

AMELIA AND CASSANDRA: SISTERS AND FRIENDS: This story was dedicated to two little girls I met whiledining at a local restaurant. They were so adorable when I interacted with them. I promised to write astory just for them to share since they told me they love to read. I hope they enjoy this story.

MATEO AND EIDEN: This story was written for all young boys who have ever been bullied. A true friend is someone who stands by you in good times and in bad. Stay strong and don’t let others put you down.

A BOY AND A TOAD: This was written for all young boys who love toads. Being kind to animals is what we all must do. Also, friends can be whatever you choose whether an animal or a human.

RABBITS IN THE WOODS: Family must always stick together in good times and in bad. Watch over yourfamily and keep them safe.

THE SAD BLUEBIRD: This story was written for anyone who sees someone in need. It’s important to always be kind even to those who are not kind in return. They may become kinder in the end.

THE MOUSE AND THE TASTY BUT SMELLY CHEESE: This was written for anyone who has tried to succeed and failed. We must always pick ourselves up again and keep trying as this little mouse did even if the cheese is smelly. I hope readers had a good laugh over this as you read the cadence with tasty but smelly cheese. I did as I wrote it!

Janice Spina is a retired administrative secretary from a public school system in Massachusetts. This is the 48th book Janice has published. She also has two mystery series of six books each, one for boys and the other for girls, even though both are enjoyed by either sex, and three books in a YA fantasy series. She has published 22 other books for young children. She also writes under J.E. Spina and has published nine novels and a short story collection for 18+.

New promos by BMGN!

I recently received some wonderful promos for my books by BMGN – Book Marketing Global Network that I wanted to share here today.

These are Novels 18+”

These are for YA: Watch for Book 4 coming in summer of 2025!

These are for MG/PT:

These are for children PS – Grade 3: with life lessons and important family values.

My newest children’s book:

There is always something brewing at JemsBooks. Watch for more books coming over the next year and beyond. There will be something for all ages to enjoy. I hope to create a new series for MG/PT and two more YA books in the fantasy series plus some more surprises that will be new to me too!

That is the beauty of being a writer who writes by the seat of her pants and lets the characters tell the story. It is exciting and quite an adventure not knowing where the story is going or how it will end. My muse makes the decisions and I go along for the ride and what a wild ride it can be!

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. A special ‘thank you’ to BMGN for the wonderful promos.

Where has spring gone?

Just when New England was beginning to show signs of spring, spring has sprung and gone to sleep. We had one day recently that was in the high 50’s and low 60’s and the next few days in the 30’s and 40’s! This is what NE weather is – wait a minute and it changes from warm to cold and back again. Sigh!

Today I saw several robins hopping around eating worms after a rainy day. It was nice to see even if it was colder than normal. They weren’t affected by the rain or the cooler temps. I couldn’t get a good photo of the robins. Sorry. I hope the sun will come out tomorrow!🎶

Here are some carnations to brighten the day even if it doesn’t feel like spring again.

In between my WIP I have been continuing to work on a jigsaw puzzle. It helps calm me as my mind wanders and unwinds. I hope to complete this puzzle before May! It’s quite difficult with all the colors of the sky and the water that seem to blend in together. My husband is my puzzle buddie and it will definitely take two to complete it!

After I worked on this puzzle I felt relaxed enough to get back to my WIP for at least two hours. I have completed more than 17K words and eighteen chapters. I am expecting to complete this book by summer.

What do you do to unwind? Do you like jigsaw puzzles, work search, or crossword puzzles? I think they all help our brains stay active.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support.

Blessings & Hugs! Stay Safe, Stay Well and God Bless!

Intervew with Author Jan Sikes!

I am honored to have a fellow author and online friend, Jan Sikes, here today. Hi Jan, so nice to see you and welcome you to Interview an Author on Jemsbooks.com. I love your photo, Jan, and the lovely jacket and blouse!

Feel free to share a little about yourself and your marvelous books with me and my readers.

Jan Sikes

Please tell us something about yourself.

Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog, Janice. Coincidentally, my name is also Janice. It’s true. My birth name is Janice Kay Smith. Yep. I was one of those Smith girls.

I am seventy-three, live in North Texas, have two daughters, and five amazing grandchildren. I’m a contributing member of the Story Empire blog where twelve writers share their strengths, hopes, and experiences for the benefit of other writers. I retired from the State of Texas in 2010 and take care of my two granddaughters each day after school. I love my morning coffee while playing word games on my phone. I have published twenty books since 2013 and working on number twenty-one.

Jjspina: My nickname is also Jan, and I too retired in 2010. We have a lot in common, my friend. I’m sure your grandkids keep you busy and give you much job. Congratulations on publishing twenty books.

When did you know that you wanted to be an author?

I’ve been an avid reader all my life. I can still remember the excitement of learning to decipher words in the first grade. But I never had a desire to be an author. That was my sister’s dream, not mine. However, I wound up in mid-life with a true story that demanded to be told. I thought someone else would tell it, but I realized one day if they did, I’d have to tell them the entire thing. So, I got busy, took creative writing classes and got to work. It took four books to chronicle my life with my late husband, who was a singer/songwriter, and I thought I’d be done. To bring that story full circle, I published a book of his poetry and art. But by then, the writing bug had bitten me. I couldn’t find a stopping place. So, I started writing short stories as a way of experimenting with different genres. From there, I moved on into novel writing.

Jjspina: Sometimes life can through us a line or open a door for us in wondrous ways. Sounds like you found your knitch. Sorry to hear of your husband’s passing. I’m sure you kept his memory alive publishing his poetry and art.

How do you come up with ideas for your stories?

Story ideas can come from anywhere. Songs have inspired many of my stories, including the first book in my latest, the Bargainer Series. I listen to music a lot, especially when I’m driving. I had the radio on in the car one afternoon when a line in a song caught my attention. The words were, “it’s fool’s gold and a beggar’s bargain…” I pulled over and jotted down ‘beggar’s bargain.’ I knew there was a story in that. And sure enough, it all came together as a historical fiction. Several of my short stories were inspired by songs, but I’ve also dreamed stories, and even got the inspiration for a story from a guided meditation. So, they can come from anywhere when we pay attention.

Jjspina: I agree, Jan, that stories can dome through many channels. It’s amazing how our minds work to bring forth the ideas we have to create our stories. I find your stories quite creative and unique.

What projects are you currently working on?

I am currently finishing up the third novel in The Bargainer Series, which I will release in a couple of months. “A Bold Bargain” is set in 1950 and will most likely conclude that series. I say “likely” because I never know. I had thought “A Beggar’s Bargain” would be a standalone, but I was wrong. This series is my first attempt at writing historical fiction and I am loving it.

Jjspina: This series intrigues me. I will check it out soon. The 50’s were my time growing up. I look forward to seeing what you have created with this era. Best of luck with the latest installment. I know what you mean when you say, you never know if it would be the last book. Your muse may have more ideas to share in the future.

What hobbies do you have when you are not writing?

I can’t say that I have any hobbies per se, such as knitting or painting, but I do love to read and keep a book going all the time. I also love playing word games. Other than that, music is my second passion and I go to hear live music every chance I get. I also participate in several music festivals across Texas each year and that season is kicking off soon. I enjoy taking part in events my grandchildren are in. My two oldest grandsons play in their school bands. My oldest granddaughter loves the theater and my youngest is cheerleading. They are all growing up way too fast.

Jjspina: Music is a wonderful passion to have, Jan. I love music too. It soothes the soul, brings light to the darkness and calms the mind. God bless your busy granddaughters with all their extracurricular activities. What a blessing to enjoy them together. I do that too.

Please share your links and where to purchase your books.

The simplest and best way to find ALL of my books is via my Amazon Author Page. https://www.amazon.com/stores/Jan-Sikes/author/B00CS9K8DK

Or my website: https://www.jansikes.com

What advice would you give prospective authors?

The best advice I can give to prospective authors is: Take time to learn the craft. Enroll in creative writing classes, or study online. There is so much information available for beginning writers these days. Take advantage of that and learn as much as you can, then WRITE!!

The second piece of advice I’ll give is this: It’s super important to have a professional editor work with you before you hit that publish button. There is nothing that will stop a reader quicker than a poorly written story full of errors. Be patient. Don’t rush into publishing if you aren’t ready.

Jjspina: This is wonderful advice, Jan. The more we write the more we grow in our craft. The more eyes that view our work the better it will become.

Jjspina

5.0 out of 5 stars A Passionate Story of Heartbreak and Healing!

Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2021

I won a copy of this book from the author.

Ghostly Interference is more than a love story. It is a story full of passion, romance, heartbreaking loss, child abuse, paranormal activity, and how love can heal a broken spirit.

The two main characters, Jag Peters and Rena Jett, are from two different worlds. Jag has always lived a comfortable life with two parents while
Rena was thrown into the state system without a mother and father. She was at the mercy of foster homes where she was abused and treated like less than human. Her only savior at that time was an older brother, Sam, who tried to keep her safe. This horrendous childhood broke her spirit and forced her to distrust anyone who tried to come close to her. When her brother died in the service in Afghanistan she felt as if she had died with him.

Jag meets Rena by nearly hitting her while she is driving her motorcycle. This incident begins their story. It is a passionate tale between them that heats up many times throughout the story.

The author created two characters with their own heartaches that touch your heart as they struggle to find love. The added paranormal touch of Rena’s brother’s spirit appearing brings the story full circle emphasizing that love transcends death.

I highly recommend this lovely story that will have you believing love heals all.

Thank you, readers, for stopping by to read about this talented and creative author. Please check out all her books on the links above for some enjoyable reading. Readers, please review hard-working authors’ books to help spread word about their work and keep them relevant in the eyes of Amazon. Thank you!

Spring is officially arriving this week!

I can feel it in the air and see it as the grass struggles to grow strong roots and green up. The trees are working on their buds and spores that can cause havoc on those who have allergies. Bushes are stretching out limbs and pushing out some signs of growth.

I love the seasons as they change. They bring a new feeling of hope and good things to come. Do you love spring? Maybe you are fortunate to live in a place that has spring or summer all the time. You are truly blessed with whatever climate you live.

Here is a poem I wrote in 2008 that I wanted to share again.

SPRING

by

Janice Spina

What does spring mean to me?

It is an awakening of nature to be all that it can be.

The ground lays dormant all through the winter weather so cold

And down under the ground grows the roots of new grass we are told.

At the first sign of warm weather the crocuses will pop through

opening their faces to the bright sun and sky serenely blue.

The trees will soon send out their lifeblood from their roots

And before our very eyes can detect new buds will then shoot.

Soon the birds and bees will have arrived

to explore after a cold winter that they somehow survived.

There is a flutter of activity from every hole in the ground

as the chipmunks and groundhogs and other rodents stick their heads out for a look around.

It makes me feel alive once again

and know that it is time, my friends

for cleaning and carting away

all the things that clutter the house and the yard this fine spring day.

Just as nature prepares ahead for the mild weather days,

we should get ready to give thanks for yet another lovely spring

God has sent our way.

2008

Did you know that spring is a perfect time to catch up on your reading and preparing for what books you will need for the summer. JemsBooks has 48 books now and more coming! Of course I will showcase one in particular that is perfect for your children for spring and Easter.

Lamby is a very different lamb because of his color. He is lonely and only wants to be accepted by the other lambs. Find out what lesson Lamby learns when a little girl, Leah, comes to the farm where Lamby lives.

This story will teach children to be kind to others who are different and that all colors are beautiful!

This book won my first book award – Mom’s Choice Awards – Silver Medal! I remember the day that I received it! I got so excited that I shared it with everyone. It was just too incredible to believe that I a novice author had won an award. I still get excited when I win an award but not as crazy as that first one. I am grateful for every honor that I receive no matter how small it may be.

This book was dedicated to my granddaughter, Leah, who had a lamby and loved it dearly carrying it around with her everywhere she went. I purchased a second one just in case she lost the first. It didn’t fool her though. When the first one got dirty my daughter would wash it and bring out the second one. Leah knew right away that it wasn’t her original lamby. She gave the second a name but it never took the place of the first. I wonder where Lamby is now? I should ask her. She is now 15 and smart and beautiful! I am so proud of her as I am of all five of my precious grandchildren.

Here are what others are saying about Lamby.

Please consider giving books to all the children on your list for all occasions. There is nothing better than to see a child’s eyes light up when you give him/her a book – even more so when you read the book to them. You are giving them so much more than you could ever imagine, e.g., you spark their imagination, heighten their creativity, lift their spirits, increase their vocabulary, open up a whole new world to them, enhance their health and wellbeing and encourage them to love reading. The gift of a book is worth more than gold to our children, grandchildren. Keep reading and gifting books to children. Let’s bring up a generation of readers and thinkers. Thank you for your support!

I feel pure joy writing for children and hope with God’s help and blessing to continue to write many more fun adventures for children to read and enjoy. I do enjoy writing for MG/PT/YA and 18+ too!

Working on some Easter projects and other things!

I can’t believe that Easter is just around the corner. I began crocheting some Easter gifts for the little ones in the family – great nieces and great nephews. All my grandchildren are older now and don’t appreciate little stuffed animals as much as they used to. On the other hand, they just might ask me for a stuffed animal too when they see how cute they are.

Here are three that I have created so far and working on two more. If I have time, I just might make a couple more in case the older ones feel left out. Each child, young and old, receives some candy for their gift anyway. We have seven younger ones and four teenagers in the family.

I sewed and crocheted the eyes and nose on to prevent the little ones from swallowing the eyes and nose if I had used safety eyes. I don’t find safety eyes and noses safe at all. I plan to make two more bears in different sizes. The next one is coming out smaller because I did not count my stitches but like the size for the youngest nephew.

Each time my grandkids visit I give them something to take home, whether it is food or something else. When I visit them, I do the same thing. I never go empty-handed. It is the joy that I receive in return when I gift something to someone who doesn’t expect it. I love watching their faces when I present something I made to them. It makes all my efforts worthwhile.

Here are some tulips that my husband surprised me with recently. I hope they brighten your day too.

I always find joy in giving more than receiving. I feel embarrassed when someone gifts me something especially if I don’t have something to give them. I would rather they didn’t give me anything and just let me give them something.

At Christmas time I enjoy surprising everyone with something new I made. This year I don’t know what I will do. I had made some hats, but I think I will most likely give them away to someone needy in the winter.

I enjoy keeping busy at all times. At my age I have to keep my mind active and my hands moving so that they don’t cramp us with arthritis. It does help.

I need to get back to my WIP, but I have kept busy crocheting and now I began a jigsaw puzzle with my husband. I have always enjoyed working on jigsaw puzzles since I was just a child. Here are some photos of my progress. This is an Italian puzzle that we found in Barnes & Noble. I love lighthouses. It reminds me of the lighthouses I have seen in Maine.

It’s quite a challenging puzzle with all the blues that are similar. We like to do it from the bottom up. How do you do a jigsaw puzzle? They are calming and fascinating to do. I did many with my dad over the years. The last day I saw him alive and awake was when he was doing a puzzle. The next day he was in the hospital and undergoing surgery on his brain. He never woke up again. It is sad to think about, but it also brings me closer to him each time I do one. It has been many years since I have done one. I think he is looking over my shoulder and guiding my hands to the pieces.

Well, I think it is time to close now and get back to preparing dinner. It’s almost that time and my husband will be calling for me to close up shop and leave the office. Sigh!

A St. Patrick’s Day Dinner with friends and some Irish Jokes to enjoy!

We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day earlier with friends. It’s always more fun that way. I cooked a boiled dinner of corned beef, cabbage, carrots, and potatoes. I also made apple pie with ice cream.

I hope you had a fun day with plenty of family, friends, tasty food, drink, and conversation. Here are some clean Irish jokes.

These short Irish jokes are simple, clever, and easy to remember:

  1. “What’s Irish and comes out in Spring? Paddy O’Furniture.”
  2. “Why do Irish golfers carry an extra pair of socks? In case they get a hole in one!”
  3. “What do you call an Irishman who keeps bouncing off walls? Rick O’Shea!”
  4. “How do you recognize an Irish pirate? He has a shamrock and roll!”

For quick laughs among adults, these short Irish jokes are perfect:

“How many Irishmen does it take to screw in a lightbulb? Two—one to hold the bulb and one to drink until the room spins.”

“How does an Irishman propose? ‘You’re grand, so you are.’”

“Why do Irishmen never get lost? They always follow their noses—right to the pub!”

“I told my Irish mate to stay away from the kettle. He said, ‘Why? Does it boil too quickly?’”

“Why don’t you iron four-leaf clovers? You don’t want to press your luck!”

“I’m on a whiskey diet. I’ve lost three days already!”

Do you have some funny Irish jokes to share. I would love to hear them – just the clean ones, please.

Thank you so much for stopping by to read this post and for your continued support. Please feel free to come back again soon.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all!

You don’t have to be Irish to enjoy this day. Wear the Green and eat lean!

Here is my favorite Irish Blessing. I once embroidered this saying and framed it. My son and daughter-in-law now have in their home. I don’t have a photo of it to share but I did add this copy of the blessing from online free photos.

I hope you have a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day!

Here is an adorable photo of a leprechaun from Secret Ireland online.

Ah, the leprechaun. That elusive, cackling keeper of gold and trickery. A creature cloaked in green and legend, dancing on the edges of Irish folklore like a whisper between worlds. But every March, as the world bathes itself in shamrocks and Guinness foam, one question inevitably floats through the festive fog:

And the answer? As layered and strange as Ireland herself.

How Big Are Real Leprechauns?

If you’re talking mythological size, they’re small enough to vanish behind a buttercup, but large enough to alter your destiny with a single wink.

If you’re talking symbolic size, they’re giants. Giants in folklore, giants in cultural memory. Leprechaun height and weight mean little when they carry the soul of a nation’s mischief on their tiny shoulders.

If you would like to read more about leprechauns, you can check out this link – https://secretireland.ie/

It’s a fascinating site all about anything that is Irish. Thank you to this lovely site for all the info and photos.

Here’s a little more about the shamrock.

There’s a curious thing that happens every March—when the winds of winter still claw at the doors, but a flicker of spring begins to whisper beneath the frost. It is in that in-between moment, in the ceremonial chambers of power and pretense, that a fragile sprig of shamrock crosses the Atlantic Ocean—not merely a leaf, but a living talisman, handed from one nation to another. And in that gesture—fragile, symbolic, theatrical, yet oddly potent—lies the beating heart of a strange tradition known as the White House shamrock ceremony.

This is not just pomp and pageantry. This is myth meeting statecraft. This is history dressed in green.

Why Is a Shamrock Called a Shamrock?

Etymologically, the word comes from the Irish “seamróg,” meaning young clover. But etymology never tells the whole story. The name itself carries softness, youth, rebirth—spring’s whisper in a frost-hardened field.

I hope you have a wonderful day full of GREEN and all things blessed.
