Do your children love to read about Hermit Crabs?

If your children love to read about Hermit Crabs, maybe you should check out my children’s book, Clarence Henry the Hermit Crab. Clarence was a real hermit crab who lived in a 90-gallon saltwater tank in our home. He was quite the character.

PINNACLE BOOK ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER!

Clarence Henry is different from other hermit crabs. He came to his new home minus one claw and a leg. He needs to protect himself until he can grow new appendages. Will Clarence Henry be able to meet the challenges in his new water world? Clarence Henry was a real aquatic hermit crab who lives in a saltwater fish tank in our home. We watched him interact with the other creatures in the tank. He was resilient, intelligent, and a joy to have as a pet. We took some photos of him as he grew his claw and leg and changed shells. We shared these photos and facts about hermit crabs in the back of the book. I hope you will enjoy them. This book will make a wonderful resource for classrooms.

We have had three different hermit crabs in our tank but at different times. They would kill each other if they were together. The first was called Conan since he destroyed all the algae and detritus in the tank in an amazing way. The second was Clarence Henry who was an incredible cleaner and kept the fish out of his way. The third was Seb Junior named by my youngest grandson and because this was the smallest of the hermit crabs. Seb Junior did his best but he wasn’t as strong as the other two. We have not been able to find another hermit crab for our tank since. They are wonderful to have as cleaners and do a tremendous job of keeping the tank bottom pristine. It saved my husband from cleaning the bottom himself which was time consuming and not fun.

These crabs were fascinating to see in action. In Clarence’s book, I have included real life photos of Clarence in action which I think your children will enjoy and parents too.

I think kids like hermit crabs because they carry their homes around with them. It’s always fun to entice them to a better home with a bigger shell!
