My second most popular children’s book is Jerry the Crabby Crayfish. This book is based on a real crayfish that we had as a pet in one of our fish tanks. He was quite a character and is missed so much!

My grandchildren loved Jerry and would try to get him riled up by staring at him or taping on the glass of his tank. This always got him extra crabby and he would raise his claws angrily at them causing them to burst into laughter. I had to stop them from causing Jerry too much grief and only let them do it one time each visit. I swear that Jerry knew when they were there and would hide inside his cave. That wouldn’t stop my grandkids from trying to get him to come out.

When we saw him hiding out for more than a day or so, we knew that he was probably molting and waiting until his new exoskeleton was strong enough to come out and join his fellow inhabitants in the tank. He was such a brilliant shade of blue that it brightened up our whole room each time we saw him. I guess it was his time when he passed. We had him for many years. We have never been able to find another one like him. We had a small red one that didn’t do well at all, sad to say.
