We had a sad event happen in our saltwater tank. We lost one clown fish, Wrasse, and two blue damsels. They evidently could not tolerate some chemical in the algae treatment that had to be added to counteract the growing red and green algae that was growing.
This treatment has been added previously to stop the growth of the red algae that was taking over the tank. It worked the last time to stop the growth but now green algae was taking over. We woke up in the morning recently to find most of the fish dead. The only two remaining fish are the smaller clown fish, the trigger and the anemone. We were surprised that the anemone was strong enough to handle the treatment. The clown fish is still avidly hosting the anemone, thank goodness. That may have saved both of them.
Here is a photo of the tank before the die-off and then after. So sad to see! We had these fish for a long time. We will not replace them for a while until we know that the tank is clear and safe to add more. The top three photos are of the tank with red tide and one without. Bottom one is how is looks now with only two fish and a an anemone.

It was a shock to see Wrasse lying at the bottom of the tank. He was so beautiful and active. The blue damsels were too. We were relieved that at least two of them survived. I guess Trigger is a lot tougher than we thought and can handle even the harshest chemicals. I think he is too stubborn to die.
Thank you for stopping by to read this post. Feel free to come back again soon. I will post updates if we buy any more fish to add to the tank and how the few survivors are doing.

That is sad. We had a hospital tank where we put the fish when we added chemicals to the big tank. We also used it to isolate a sick fish so it wouldn’t contaminate the others. Saltwater fish are a lot of work but so beautiful to watch.
I’m so sorry to hear this. When we had an algae problem we put the fish in another tank and drained and scrubbed the tank to avoid the chemicals. This is a real tragedy.
Sounds like a good idea but fish get stressed when you net them and move them too. We have had problems that way also. So sad to lose them. 🥲
Thank you, Noelle. So sad to lose them. We will be nervous if we have an algae problem again. 🥲 Your suggestion might work.
We did have to scrub our tank regularly!
John is always cleaning and replacing water and salt but algae is a hard thing to get rid of now that we have the new lights for the anemone. Algae loves the light! Sigh! 😳
Are there algae-eating salt water fish?
Snails, starfish eat it but they are eaten by trigger. We can’t keep them too long before he gets them. 🤣
Aw, sending hugs!
Thank you, Annette! ❤️
