Where do you get the inspiration to write?

I have been asked this question by many about where I get the inspiration to write since I am a prolific and eclectic writer. My inspiration comes in many ways that lead me to write across genres for all ages.

Let me list the ways:

  1. Experiences in everyday life
  2. Dreams
  3. In the shower
  4. While reading others’ books
  5. Through my muse
  6. Random things

Once an idea comes to me by one of these means, I try to write it down or at least a few clues to remind myself to get back to it as soon as I can. The problem with this is that I am always inundated with so many ideas that some of them float through my brain and are lost, maybe forever.

I do not get discouraged if I lose one or more of these ideas because there are many more pushing their way forward in my head begging to come out. I have been quite fortunate to never get writer’s block or run out of more ideas by which to create stories. I feel blessed to be able to say that and hope I don’t jinx myself by doing so. Yikes!

When I begin a story from one of these random ideas I always start with a title. Once I have the title in place (I can change it but haven’t too often), the story flows out of the tips of my fingers the second they touch the keys of my laptop.

The funniest thing is that I can be away from a story for months and then go back in and read the last chapter I wrote and pick up the story from there as if I never left it. I can’t believe I can do this but I attribute it to my muse who is always close by nagging me at the back of my brain with another idea. It’s as if sparks are flying in my head.

At present I have ten more titles waiting to have stories created once my fingers touch the keys again. It can be daunting at times. To think that I didn’t know if I would have anything to keep me busy once I retired. I think my muse came out of retirement with me to haunt me in my dreams and throughout each day. A little scary if I think too hard about it.

The most difficult side of all this is a question I often ask myself. That question is: Will I be around long enough to complete all these possible stories? My goal keeps moving forward with each year. I have been saying that I will publish 50 books before I leave this world. Now I am at 43 and soon will have 44 with 10 more in the wings, I will surpass 50 easily in a year or two. My goal will have to be moved up to 60 books.
