Recently the town I live in has taken a stand on bullying. They plan to meet and devise an updated policy on handling bullying. Here is the article by Alex Guittarr of Londonderry Times on September 6, 2018 as posted in the local newspaper.
Children have to understand there are consequences for their actions at all times in school, in the home and on the outside. I commend Londonderry School District on their dedication in making their school environment safe for children.
Two of my books have dealt with bullying, Davey & Derek Junior Detectives, Book 1, The Case of the Missing Cell Phone and my newest Series, Abby & Holly, School Dance Book 1.
As a young child and even as I grew older I suffered from bullying in school and out. We didn’t have bullying policies back then. All we did was go home and cry to our parents about any problems. My mother most of the time told me to ignore them and they would go away or stop bothering me. Sometimes that worked but other times they became more merciless with their bullying.
With today’s ever advancing technology and all the online sites bullying has become epidemic in proportions. This makes it even more crucial that we protect our children from this abuse.
Because of my former experiences I always watched out for others who were mistreated all through school and continue now to advocate for the oppressed. Please educate your children about how they should behave toward others in school and out.
For this reason, all my young children’s books and middle-grade books have life lessons that encourage children to behave, care for one another, be kind to those less fortunate, listen to and respect others, accept differences in each other as precious. We are all different but that’s what makes us special in God’s eyes. He made us that way. Why can’t we accept that and love one another for those differences.
This world would be a boring place if we are all the same. Right? Enjoy and celebrate your differences and share that with your children. This is a wonderful post, Janice. I’m appalled when I hear about the bullying that takes place today. And as you pointed out, children have no escape from it. There is no “safe zone” for them, because even at home, all the social media sites are available 24/7. I hope more towns and school districts take a stand as yours as done, and kudos to you for teaching life lessons in your books!

I too was bullied as a child, Janice, and I know first hand the emotional scars can be long lasting. Unfortunately there are too many children out there today who do not learn discipline or how to treat others with respect at home, so it falls to the school, the teachers, and the community to do so. Thank goodness that towns like yours are recognizing this problem and taking action.

Great topic Janice. Sorry to say that our daughter was bullied in middle school as well. She tells us that other kids would call her terrible names and walk up behind her and try to trip her in the hallways constantly for no reason. It was a terrible terrible time in her life and ours as parents. She got so bad that she tried to jump out of a second story window and a car traveling 55 miles per hour to try to end her life. We could not figure out why she was doing that. It was then that we took her to be evaluated and the doctors recommended home schooling which we did for several years. She still suffers to this day with the trauma she endured during those bullying years. What an awful awful thing that some kids do to other kids… Children who bully others should be thrown out of school in my opinion. There should be absolutely no tolerance for this.
Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that, Tony. It is an awful thing to suffer through and it has to be stopped before more children try to harm themselves. I wrote two middle-grade books that touched on bullying. I will do everything in my power to try to encourage parents to educate their children about this in the hopes of curtailing bullying in school and out.Thank God your daughter was not successful in harming herself. 100% agree in this Janice. I touch upon the subject albeit briefly in The Curse of Time. I feel very strongly about this too.
